older used 68 automag, repair questions

I was just given an older, used 68AutoMag as a birthday gift. I would like to know what I should do about a few problems I am having. Since I live in a small town there aren't many places I can have my gun looked at. Let me tell you how the gun is setup before I explain the problems.

The gun has a vertical bottle adapter and bottomline that runs to a psycho ballistics drop forward. Everything else is stock. It is a standard feed gun. Body is a bit scratched up and there is some rust on the inside of the frame. Rust reaches inside to the valve. Came w/ a 20oz co2 tank and a smart parts barrel.

    the promblems..

The first day I played I used a co2 tank. I froze up the gun and busted the o-rings =o( The gun was leaking air from the back of the valve. Fortunately someone was kind enough to replace them for me. Now I have switched to compressed air. I am using a 68ci Crossfire tank @3000psi.

The safety is loose on the gun. It is so loose that during games it will move from the safety off position to safety on position. I have no idea what to do. For me this is a big problem. I was told to just take it out but I would rather not, it feels wrong. How can I fix it?

After the gun was returned to me w/ new o-rings I have been unable to remove the quick disconnect so i can't field strip the gun. I was told that the gun is in dire need of oil. I was also told that the spring inside needs an oil treatment. I was wondering if I should just replace the spring. The quick disconnect is very very tight now. The owner of the shop could not open it.

The field strip screw is almost completely stripped. It is hard to turn I am going to order the replacement tonight.

Tonight there seems to be air leaking down the barrel of the gun.. I dl'ed the owner's manual so I will just follow instructions to troubleshoot that.

I do chop some paint but I think that's just b/c of my rate of fire w/o a revvy. I will buy one soon but stick to 3 shot bursts for now.

What to do? I am really vexed that I can't open the quick disconnect and that the safety is sliding on/off. Suggestions?

I would like to upgrade my gun but am in no rush. Since all I've had to pay for was a hp tank I intend to add the AGD Intelliframe, 9v revvy, and the level 10 bolt. The rt valve will have to wait a bit. Also, would getting a new mag body w/ powerfeed help much or is the revvy on my standard feed enough? And as far as the rust.. do I just use fine sandpaper to rid my frame of it? The frame is scratched pretty bad too any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any info or help you can give. Hope to find someone here in town that can help me out. I was told this gun is 6 yrs old... the valve should still be ok right? I will post some pictures tomorrow.

Sounds like your quick disconect is broken. You don't need to replace the bolt spring unless it is so compressed that it doesn't rise above the nose of the bolt when stripped. Sound like the problem with your safety is that it's missing the spring. Somethimes they pop out when you disasemble the safety for cleaning.

I'd send it in to AGD and have them go over it. It might cost you a couple bucks, but it'll be worth the piece of mind. You can register it with them, and they'll get you a copy of the auto mag video, which will tell you everything you kneed to know about maintaining your mag.

The power feeds do help a lot with blowback and consiquently, ROF. It sounds like your planning on getting the intelliframe and a retro valve in the future, so get a 12 volt revvy with the Xboard now, and save yourself the cost of buying two loaders.

I would also check to see if the valve has any stars left on it. Stars on an Automag mean free service repair from AGD, all you have to pay for is shipping. Also, instead of having a quick disconnect and stainless steel lines I would invest in some macroline and 90* elbows, much better for field stripping and much better looking. Good luck with your mag, and welcome to the AO community!

id say definatley get a new body if it has any rust at all on it

if any part has rust on it id replace it immeaditly, also, after every time you play (not every round but at like the end of the day) get ALL the paint off the entire gun, take it apart and wipe any paint from chops or whatever out of teh inside then wipe the paint off the outside as well.

because teh mag body is stainless steel it will rust if you let the paint stay on it

As far as the saftey being loose. Above the saftey on the grip frame, there is a small allen screw. Be sure that is tightend all the way down. If it is and you still have this problem, then make sure there is bother a spring and a ball inside that hole. Be sure not to loose them, as they are very small parts, and easy to loose track of. Drop that ball in a carpet and bye bye. If they are both in there, the spring might need to be replaced.
The quick disconnect situation is an odd one. Do you take the tank off the gun before trying to disconnect it? Be sure that there is no pressure in the lines when you are taking it apart, that will make it difficult to remove. If it still doesn't move, then it may need to be replaced. You could try taking it off, and seeing if it comes apart. If it doesn't, you can try putting it in a vice and pulling or somthing, it may mess it up, but what do you have to loose the thing would need to be replaced anyway.
Field strip screw, no choice but to get a new one.
Air leaking down the barrel, look at the owners manual, if it doesn't help, give us all the details, plus what you tried and we can help.
6 years old your valve should be fine, mine is older than that, and works great. Gripframes on the other hand are made out of alluminum, of Carbon Fiber. So, i'm lost on how the thing got rusted.
