How to build a large valve?

My genius friends have decided to build a potato cannon. They have decided to put me in charge of designing the launching mechanism because someone told them I know this kind of thing. I am thinking of it in terms of a very very large paintball gun. Using compressed air as a source, and a small 4500psi scuba tank as the tank. The valve / firing mechanism is where I hit a wall. The guys at home depot just gave me blank faces, so Im turning here. The valve needs to open fast, fully, and close just as fast, and it has to be able to operate by remote (pushing a button). Any and all help is suggested.

For refference, the last one we built used hairspray and a sparkplug as fuel, and we sent a potato over 400 yards (it was angled like a mortar). Also, if you have suggestions for alternative non violent forms of ammunition, by all means.

This is the forum for trouble shooting your Airgun Designs products, including the Automag, RT, E-Mag, and WarpFeed. Also a great place to ask technical questions about non AGD products. An Airsmith's homeroom!
