ReTro ate my sear...(with stock frame!)

I got my ReTro valve about a month ago, I use a preset tank and from the day i've gotten it the trigger went "retro" quite easily, just by applying a small pressure to the trigger. About last week my mag started firing on the pull and the return about half of my shots, which i figured unusual, so i took apart the mag and examined the sear, on the top the goldish hard coating had been shaven off the left side of the sear but the right side was still ok, i figured it was normal wear. I was firing in my basement today and my mag went full auto on me, i took out the sear to find that the little apex where it catches the bolt had been chipped down and the goldish hardening was worn away.

So, my question, AGD is there something that I might have done that could cause excessive sear wear? keep in mind i'm using a stock frame, and the trigger rod was NOT adjusted, nothing has been changed since i bought my ReTro valve. Or is it possible i got a sear that was bad to begin with and just got worse because it was originally bad? If so, is it possible for me to get a replacement sear? for the time being, my minimag has no sear because it's in my ReTro.

    Thanks

now that i'm thinkin about it, from the first couple games i played it would double fire if you tapped the trigger, i assumed i was just bouncing the trigger and i couldnt release fast enough, i'd bet it was double firing (early sign of bad sear)...odd...I hope this mini' sear holds up.

Maybe it was just time for you to replace the sear.

i had only put about 3 cases of paint through it, i got it a month ago, it was definitely NOT normal time to replace the sear, Tom, Rob, Jon, HELP! I don't think this old sear is going to work well with the ReTro...it's one of the OLD sears that looks all silvery, doesn't have the gold finish, and it's got a straight line of metal from the front tip to the joint where the trigger rod is attached, as opposed to the contoured front of the newer sear that came with my ReTro, the SN for this mini is MM04434 if that helps...i don't wanna keep killing sears.

I just had another thought. Your sear rod length might have been too long for your trigger, not allowing the sear to catch all the way.

However, you said just one side of it was shaved off at first? That seems odd. The top should be catching, you shouldn't see any shaving on the sides. Do you mean one side of the face of the sear point was shaved off? Don't let me put words in your mouth...

I'm thinking the tigger rod may have been adjusted wrong. You KNOW AGD tests this stuff, and they won't sell you mods that wreck your sh*t. Call them up, with the serial of your retro, and tell them it ate your sear. They will help ya out, man. I hear nothing but good things about their tech support in this forum.

              it's a newer rail, it's about 10 months old.

Is service on a ReTromag free? especially because i've only had it for about a month...i tried to call customer service but they're gone at world cup, i'm going to try again monday. I fired about 300 shots with this mini sear and i think i'm already seeing signs of wear, so i'm just going to send my ReTromag (with the dead sear that came with my ReTro) into AGD if possible instead of possibly causing further fubarness. Hopefully they'll be able to put a new sear in it and fire about a thousand shots of air through it and magically the gun will be all nice and perfect again-i hope...I haven't done anything to the mag that could possibly void any warranty, never used any aftermarket parts, still have stock frame, still using body rail that came with my old powerfeed mag, and never touched the trigger rod.

Thanks ahead of time AGD and anyone that might help me out here

What did the bolt look like? Your using the bolt that came with the retro, right?

                Any nics?

no nicks on the bolt, an extended nose AGD bolt that came with the ReTro

Hmmmm, to me in seems coincidental that your sear wore out the same time. But I'm not sure. It seems as if the source of the problem may be the on/off. Check all the o-rings in it and make sure that the on/off pin isn't worn down or that it is the proper length. To me it seems like the on/off pin is to short and that it's hammering down on your sear causing it to chip as to why its only on one side. Your on/off pin may not be crroked. i really don't know why it's only wearing on the left but look at the sear. When you wear down the gold finish you SHOULD see a perfect silver circle this tells you were the on/off pin is making contact. Your on.off pin may be making contact on the left side and it may be too short causing this problem. It may also be a defective sear. Who knows. Thats why I always carry 4 extra sears. One more thing, what does your sear pin look like? Is it silver or a shiny black?

Taking mags apart is fun, its even more fun when you don't know what you're doing

the sear pin is rounded and silver, the same kind that comes with a classic 68 powerfeed mag, no new sear pin came with my ReTro so I used the same one from my classic mag. I put a LOT of paint through my mag with the classic valve (i have since sold said valve) with this sear pin and the old sear (sold with valve) and there was no visible wear on the sear. My on/off pin came with the ReTro, and I have not so much as taken the on/off assembly out to oil it but twice. I'm going to call AGD on monday and hope that they'll fix my sear and get my gun back to me soon as I have two tourneys in november and i barely have the $ to squeek by on the tourneys, much less enough $ to pay for a new sear/whatever else may solve said sear problem before then, and i don't think the mini sear will hold up for two tourneys, it's showing wear after 300 shots. Thank goodness it's AGD i'm dealing with and not some other company :)

I'm thinking about getting an e-mag before next tourney season starts once I am able to start saving up my paychecks as i will have all winter with no tourneys and, thus, money to save :) All of the o-rings in the on/off are new (came with ReTro) and have no problem sealing. I know a fair bit about mags, but i figured before i buy another sear to have it die for unknown reasons i'd let the real experts handle it, and not botch the job myself :)

maybe if i sent my ReTro in for service AGD would throw some plastic nubbins in the box for me to test if they have any left (and maybe even some stickers!)
