    Reg

Oh, my plan was to get a non-preset tank and use a regulator that can actually go up to 900psi or other outputs greater than my preset Crossfire and sell my old tank.

Is venting what makes it stop or is it when the bolt goes to full pressure?

Venting out the back is a pressure relief valve that is a saftey feature. It will vent at ~550psi to make sure the valve doesn't get feed too much pressure.

If you have a preset tank a regulator will not allow you to output any more pressure than the tank itself can't put out. In fact to work correctly you need to have 150-200psi higher presure on the regulators input than output.

Your best bet is an used adjustable output tank. Look for an old AA 'Geddon or Apoc. They are heavy, but built like a tank, and will output a much higher pressure than you need. There is no need for a second regulator, and it may actually cause you a lot of headaches.

        TANK

That's exactly what I just said. I would sell my current preset (68ci 3000psi steel crossfire) and get a whole new tank, an adjustable 68ci 4500psi one. So I would therefore need a regulator that is adjustable. Any suggestions on affordable and effective regs for Mags? I would like to do a front grip one but if I would need a certain kind for the adjustable tank, what is a good brand? Again, the tank will NOT be a preset one, I would use the reg as the tank reg so it is adjustable.

          venting

And my question regarding what venting is actually doing is entirely in reference to the functionality of the shims, nothing to do with the valve regulator.

I see exactly where the problem is here.

An adjustable tank IS a reg. It consists of a bottle and a tank reg that can be adjusted for output.

If you put ANY kind of tank on you gun (pre-set or adjustable) and used ANY OTHER reg that wasn't PART OF THE TANK (ie screwed into the bottle), you would be using 2 regs before the Retro and would get shoot down. You cannot get a tank that has no reg screwed into/onto it so it is impossible to have forgrip reg and a HPA tank and not have two regs. (Before anyone says it...yes I know it technically could be done but not without pointless effort)

What you want to do is get an adjustable tank (68ci bottle with 4500psi adjustable reg if that size fits you) and have this linked to your Retro without any other regs in between.

So, to sum up, all you need to purchase is an adjustable tank. I suggest the Flatline or the Max-Flo.

              BINGO

Thanks Tramp, you answered exactly what I was saying. I can understand why others kept thinking two regs, I didn't know I couldn't have a tank on a drop forward and a hose to the first reg. My bad, I have only dealt with presets.

That sucks I gotta buy one of those systems, I'll probably stick with Crossfire Preset because I haven't seen a 4500psi Maxflo or Flatline for any less than $350 (if that), and even that is too rich for my blood. The Crossfire has worked fine and they make 68/4500s in Carbon Fiber for around 200. This game is expensive!!!!!!!!

If you get an adjustable tank, you do not need a second regulator before you feed the valve. All a third regulator in the system will do is add weight with no gain.

-edit: Yeah, twice and stuff. Darn work getting in the way of browsing...

Something to check for someone that ahas a set of dial calipers, the on/off pin length. The ones here are .750" in length and that too me seems to long for a Retro/Xvalve.

For giggles see if you can get someones Retro in your gun and have it work and if it shoots take thier on/off assembly out and swap it into yours and see if that clears up your problem.

                    Rob,

Im with you on the on/ off pin legnth. Although I havent taken a set of calipers to an X-valve on/off pin yet, I have noticed that the same valve will perform differently in two different guns. I suppose that it has to do with body rail thickness, ect. Unfortunately, it's not economically feasable for me to have several different legnth on/off pins in the shop to custom fit everyone's retrovalves/ x-valves. And of course trying to shave pins is generally not a good idea- - shave too much and it gets costly quick.

                    QUINCYMASSGUY,

The train of thought im riding here relates to you in regards to getting your trigger 'just right'. A different legnth on/off pin will affect the way that your trigger feels, as well as the amount of kickback that you feel in it at any given input pressure.

AGD made reference to this same phenomenon a couple years ago in regards to the original retrovalves. Many people noted that the trigger on their retromags did not feel as good as a straight-stock RT. The reason had to do with findig an on-off pin legnth that would work in basiclly any gun it was put in- - - including guns up to 10 years old, (wide vareity of manufacturing batches) as well as guns sporting stuff like aftermarket body rails.
In contrast, the RTs were much more alike in manufacturing specs. The on/off pins fit just like they should for optimum performance, not simply 'workable'.

My solution to getting the trigger just right was just sending the gun into AGD to have them fit a perfectly matched on/off pin in there for me. No the guns shoot waay better than most other retromags ive seen. And it was alot cheaper than me buying several slightly different pins, and test fitting myself. Just for giggles, I attempted to let a friend borrow my valve one day (he didnt have retro). We just dropped my valve in his gun- - - and it wouldnt fire. THe pin was the wrong legnth for his gun.

At this point in time, when i sell any customer an x-valve, i reccomend strongly that they send the gun in to AGD and have them install it for this reason. It seems to be working really well, SO i might suggest that you look into doing the same if you are thinking that your trigger should be giving you a little more than it is.

Also, I might add that I am running a crossfire pre-set system on one of my retromags- - - I dont need an adjustable (although it would be fun to play with). After i sent the gun in, 850 psi amazingly hit it right on the head.

Sorry for the long post, but hope that it may help.

                      Exactly

That's exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for Smokee, how much did AGD charge you to get that done? I have a brand new XValve I just purchased from your online store and wouldn't mind sending it in to get the on/off pin adjustment because I know they have to make them all long enough to work no matter what. I just got my Intelliframe from your online store as well so now would be a good time to have this work done. Any figures or other work AGD can do would be useful to know. Thank you. I maybe be getting the new body when it's released, would this affect the pin length setting?

First off, The new aluminum body probably will affect the necessary pin legnth. When your talking about pin legnth differences in incriments of .001, that distance could definitly be changed by installing a new body. Thats the only reason that Im waiting to get aluminum bodies for my mags - - - getting the trigger exactly where i want them. (the fact that a friend of mine is getting a 4 axis mill setup over the next 4 months plays into this too.

As far as how much for getting them to set the pin for you, im actually not sure. In my case, Both of my retromags had some other work that needed to be done- - as well as some parts that needed to be replaced. THere was no specific charge for the on/off pin setting that i recall (except perhaps for the cost of the new pin itself.)

The last person i hooked up with an x-valve has his gun at agd currently. I have not heard of any charges other than shipping the gun up there. - - - but he set his gun to the x-valve as opposed to having the valve sent to him, and then shipping it all back.

I would suggest that you call AGD and ask specifically. I dont know if joann or marcia have that information handy- - but im sure that they could find out for you.

As far as other tricks and services that AGD could do for you, there's not anything that i can think of right off the bat- - - this is excluding repair work, of course. Everything else is pretty straight forward on the gun. There are no other parts that shoud have to be tinkered with(except lvl 10 stuff).

                        Hope this helps,

                        Carl

Just a Not a rt on/off pin isnt that much and keeping 1 or 2 long ones handy for clipping better serves your customers when there is a problem.

Good idea, thanks for the tip. However, what is the best way to trim them down with keepint a good contact surface. The one time it tried doing this (my own) I had it set right, but the surface of the pin was not cut flush- - - and wasnt working consistently. When I tried to even it up, i wound up going to far. If if remember correctly, i was using somthing like 400 grit sandpaper.

Any idea how much AGD charges for this work? I'll be getting the new body soon and I figured it they do the tradein program with old bodies I'd just send my whole gun in (Intelliframe + XValve too which were both bought direct from AGD) and have them set it up including a trigger stop at the appropriate spot as I keep hearing it's the best way to go. I had 4 stars on my previous valve unused but figure I would need one on the XValve or pay something.

                                They don't do body trade-ins.

Also, the sear comes adjusted to where it's supposed to be most of the time. Just put it together yourself. It's more fun that way.
