Re: Ambitious Project (Tom and like minded?)
1)i dont see any, just make sure the emag is mounted securely
2)^ditto^
3)tom's tech tips
4)include every brand of paintballs... see how BE stands up
5)50 feet and make a target with circles like a target. (see tom's tech tips)
6)use an adjustable bore barrel like a freak
7)basicly you need a freak, a clamp, chrono, good air source, and the target
8)not that i see, you minght have to add as you gosigpic

well, I took enough stat in college. well, there are several way of handling the sample. best one to use is mean and standard deviation. mean+3*SD captures 99% of population assuming a normal distribution (close enough in this case) I would use size of 30 sample for dia measurement. That should give fairly good picture.
For accuracy, this may be good time to find out what bore size compared to mean paintball diameter is the best. I would use freak set, as it is available and used widely. I would use 10 shot pattern, and run it 2-3times per paint/bore combo.
Since most of us match paint/bore combo without measuring, you may also want to see how good we are at bore matching, and see how it stacks against the measured data.
also, record age of paintball, there has always been a anecdotal evidence that old paintball is bad, so prove this as well. On suggestion is that get a case of each paintball, store them in a controlled environment, run the same test once a week, to see the effect of age is on the paintball.
sounds like a great project.

most of the statistical function that you need is built into the excel spread sheet, without resorting to stat program. So, it may be easier to use excel. My job requires use of quite a bit of stat, and except for some statistical process control, we use excel a lot. (mathcad and flow3d for modeling)

Remember that alot of different brands of paintballs are made by the same companies. Think about RPS
Also I would recomend trying to buy from places with high turnover or direct from the manufactuer. This will insure fresh paint.

I agree that the age of the paint is going to be one variable that is going to be very hard to control. We will be buying our paint from Actionvillage.com as this is where we normally order our paint. We wanted to get our paint from our normal source so we could test how well the paint held up to the normal shipping function. We felt that if we received a "special" or direct shipment that it may not be trully representative of what we receive week after week. It will be interesting to me to see if the softer shelled (lower Break test scores) paint has a higher incidence of broken/deformed balls upon delivery. My assumption would be yes but we shall see. One way we want to try to work out some of the random variables is to run tests on multiple cases of the same brand of paint but to purchase them with weeks or months between cases. This may allow us to get paint from another batch as well as test the balls under slightly different weather conditions. We will track the temperature, humidity, etc on the days we test the balls to see if there is any correlation.
I will take a look at both Excel and the "Jump-In" program. I assume for our rather simple analysis either should work.
I would like to thank you all for your feedback it has been very helpful.
