    Automag RT explosion

My first mag and Im already in need of help...

I bought an Automag RT used on Ebay, gassed it up and after quite a few shots it locked up.

turns out the (bolt spring retainer?) let lose in the body of the gun allowing the bolt to push the retainer and barrel forward cutting a gouge into the barrel via the barrel twist lock nubbin.

The barrel was of course wedged into the body which required total disassembaly of the marker to remove, the twist lock nubbin was galled by the aluminum of the barrel but managed to clean up ok, the barrel is the least of my worries being that a freak back end is already on the way.

The problem is, even after returning the (retainer)in the body to its origianl position and putting the marker together the retainer slips forward while firing and again pushes everything forward locking the gun. (and blocking the powerfeed with the retainer)

Also, Im using HPA flatline at 800psi output, and Im not running the gun over 300fps

Does anyone know what method was used at the factory to secure this retainer?

Do you think pinning it in place would be an ok idea? (Tap, die, screw)

I really dont want to buy a new body so any help would be appreciated.

I'd imagine the retaining ring is brazed or welded in place, pinning or screwing it in place will almost certainly not work.

AGD do stand by their products though, and this sort of failure is rare, so the best bet would be to phone them and have a chat. They will fix it for you.

      Thanks for the reply cgrieves.

I agree that its probably brazed. the body of course is aluminum, the ring is steel, (found that out using a magnet)so there's no welding going on.

I was also thinking the ring may be soldered,(Flux and Pipe solder) but due to the long lasting reputation of mags Id have to say that soldering sounds a bit weak.

I've searched high and low for anyone ever having the same problem, no luck there.

The tech support guy's are out right now for the ultimate maddness game so it looks like I wont have my gun for this weekends game

      thanks again.

The body is not aluminum, it is also steel.

Call AGD or email the tech support and get an RA number right away. You're correct in assumeing that you probably won't have it for this weekend, but this is a problem best fixed by them.

I stand corrected, the body is a grade of stainless steel that wont hold a magnet. (Thanks potatoboy)

That leaves me hope to repair it myself if AGD wont send me a new body. (I dont even know if they should my gun is pretty old)

Thanks for the help people, Ill let ya know what happens.

I believe that the ring is silver soldered in place just like the feed tube. Even if you are adept at that sort of thing I think it would still be a challenge. The ring has to be in a specific position or the gun won't work right.

Best bet is to call AGD

Tim, after some research I think the silver solder is the correct assumption.(Hard solder)

I called AGD today and they said they do not repair bodys, on top of that they only have hopper right bodys left for sale that fit my RT.(mine is hopper left)

Looks like its up to me to fix, Ill let you guys know how it turns out.

                Thanks.
