Anyone opened up a PMI Tank Reg before?

    Ok,

I just got a PMI 68/45. Hydro is still new 5/02. However, there is a hiss coming from the pin valve. I figured since I overhauled a normal vertical grip Pure Energy regulator, the tank reg should be of similar design.

Alot of things came to mind when opening this. It was alot easier than older regs (which need a vice and left scratches after) since this new one had 2 setscrews to lock the reg top in place. Loosening these 2 made the top spin off easily (nice design PMI, easy to rebuild in the future).

First thing I noticed, the pin valve seal looked almost identical to the white teflon on/off o-ring from the classic valves. Are they?

Also, I was curious on how much oil to put on the seals. A person from my field said that NO oil should go on the seals, only on the moving parts... WHAT ?!? I assumed that oil on the seals would help them "seal". I basically put a thin coat and massaged them on with my fingers. Is there such thing as over oiling?

Another thing. Looking at the spring pack for the regulator, I know this isnt recommended, but can a simple metal washer be added to the spring pack to increase output pressure of the tank? The washer will add more travel that the reg piston must move before seating on the seal, there by requiring more pressure on the spring pack. This would be nice to move the 800-850 output to like 900 or so.

    LMK All.

This is my first PMI tank rebuild if thats what youd call it. Imma about to slap in the new teflon o-ring and hope it seals when i have my friend bring it to the local shop to get it filled.

I would think that adding a washer to the spring would lower your pressure, but it depends on the design. You can try it and see what it does, as long as you dont try to put too many in there. As for the oil, there is no such thing as too much oil, just shoot a marker 30-40 times when you reasemble the reg to use any extra oil in it. Oil will usualy help seal better.
As for the oring, you can probably use it since i belive the teflon o rings can handle high pressure fine.
    Hope that helps.

the pin valve o-ring is actually the same as the fill-nipple o-ring.

i have often thought about adding a washer to my spring to, as theoretically it would raise the output pressure, but i never got arround to doing it.

I have the exact same problem. I contacted PMI and they sent me a rebuild kit (ok, a tiny white o-ring). But it turns out I have the old style reg, which isn't supposed to be user-serviceable. They gave me an RA number for return and repair, but I didn't bother sending it in...the leak only occurs below 500psi or so...at which point the tank is useless anyway.

Do not use oil on a tank reg. The high pressures when combined with heat due to filling can cause the oil vapour to ignite.

You can add shims to increase output.

Good quality o-rings are the answer to stopping leaks.

            ...

I have heard that as well where pressure from the tank can ignite the oil, but... are you saying NO oil on the reg seals? Are they fine as they are dry?

if you have a newer reg on you pureenergy it can be rebuilt
to tell the newer ones have a pureenergy jew sticker on it.
if it doesnt then its a none servicable reg and needs to be
              sent in.

i just had the same leak as you and contacted pmi and they
shipped me the pin and oring for free. my tank date was
10/02. call and give it a shot you might get one free?

Teflon o-rings are used in regulators because they require no lubricant.
