My understanding is it should fit snug and have minimal daylight around it (the ball) when looking through. A good rule of thumb is try and blow the ball out. If it comes out easy then the insert is too big, and vice versa.
If the ball is too small for the bore the velocity will be eratic and you will have terrible Efficiency. -
I've found that you want it loose but not so loose that it falls out. Place the paint in the tube/barrel and give a gentle puff. The ball should go all the way out or at least to the porting. Too tight of a fit and some paint may break in the barrel. (In other words you shouldn't have to bust a blood vessel blowing paint through your barrel) Too loose and you may double feed.
Also, try 3-5 different balls. I've found that no matter which manufacturer there is some variance in size from ball to ball.Comment

pUT THE BALL IN THE INSERT AND LOOK AT IT, YOU SHOULD TWO TO THREE EVEN CRACKS OF LIGHT AROUND THE EDGES. tHEN BLOW ON THE INSERT LIKE IT IS A PAINTBALL BLOW GUN. tHE BALL SHOULD SHOULD FIT SNUGLY AND HAVE SOME RESISTANCE WHEN BLOWN OUT. tHEN REPEAT THE ABOVE WITH A COUPLE DIFFERENT BALLS TO GET THE AVERAGE.
