Tank/reg compatability question

Could you put a 4500 psi reg on a 3000 psi tank? I have a tank that says 3000 on the original hydro, just got it rehydroed and it says 4500. Whats the deal? Can any nitro tank handle any pressure<4500 psi??

If your tank was originally rated for 3000 psi, I would not recommend trying to fill it past that mark.

The hydro guy may have mistakenly tested it to 4500 psi, which is OK, ONCE.

Hydro tanks should have a factor of saftey of at least 3, probably more like 4.5, so you shouldn't worry about still using it.

I doubt that any field would fill it past 3k anyway, but if they offer, don't do it. While it may not burst until it gets to 9 or 10k psi, the cyclical overloading will cause your tank to fail hydro prematurely, or even reduce the factor of safety.

does it say it is rated for 4.5k now, or did the hydro report say it was tested to 4.5k? cause when you hydro a tank, you test it to 5/3 of the capacity. so it will have been tested to a higher pressure than you operate it at.

as for the first question. yes, you can put a 4.5k reg on a 3k tank. but you will still only be able to fill the tank to 3k!

(very important!!! you can only pressurise something to the lowest rated item. if you have a 4.5k reg on a 3k tank, 3k is the highest you can pressurise. if you have a 3k reg on a 4.5 tank, 3k if the highest you can pressurise.)

Sure you can put the reg on but I wouldn't fill it to 4500psi unless you enjoy the chance of the tank bursting in your face.

When tanks are hydroed they are tested at 5/3 rated pressure. So a 3k tank gets pressurized to 5k, and a 45 to 7500psi.

I'm gonna guess your tank has a 5000psi mark on it somewhere from the hydro. If you don't, then your tank was tested to an improper pressure. You shoudl call the hydrotesters... if the tank PASSED at 7500psi hydro (as if it were at 4500psi tank) I wouldnt' call the tank dead... but I wouldn't use it past 3000psi. (I have a tank that someone hydroed to 7500psi once, it did pass the last hydro at 5k as well, I still won't use it as a 4500psi tank, even though the reg can handle it)


Long story short. DO NOT fill the bottle beyond rated pressure. Do NOT even do a "scuba style" 10% overpressure. Our bottles are rated for ONE pressure and ONE pressure only. Going over it is taking your life and other peoples lives into your hands. Be safe!
