    The price of fashion, or weight vs. $$$$

    Just fooling around -

    So you sent your rail for milling, at 35$ for a 3 ounce reduction. You are so proud of this major step that you decide to dress up your mag before posting pictures of the ULE beauty. Some KAPP panels to match your chrome frame and a SS freak back instead of that plain jane aluminum back would be just the ticket.

    KAPP panels cost you at least $32 over the cost of the Dye stickys that come with an intelliframe, and added 2.1 ounces to your marker. That is a negative $15 per ounce.

    How about a SS freak back instead of aluminum - that is at least a 20$ difference, with a 1.5 ounce weight penalty. Roughly 13$ per ounce.

    Your mag now weight more than it did before, by .6 ounces, and you are out $87 due to dressing it up. You just spent about 12$ per ounce to get the weight down, then jacked it up again.

    Not too say there is no value in looking good, I like it too. Just interested in all aspects of building a mag, particularly how to cut weight (and still look good).

      I say go w/ what looks good and performs well. If you're to weak to carry it around work out some more! I do end up looking at my guns more than playing w/ them tho, but hey, at least they look nice!

          Also if you would not have milled out that stuff in the first place your cool lookin marker would have been heavier than it is now by 3.6 ounces. So all in all i think the milling was worth it in this case. Just a 12:58 am thought?!

              This is a great thread I think we are very like minded.


              In anycase for years now I have preached that ROF will not be what makes a gun "cool" in the near future, rather weight. I am sure we will get plenty of comments from folks in this thread about "working out" when in reality why not spend a few hundred bucks to drop some needed weight off your rig and play strong all day long?

                  Here is one example:

                  ULE body/roguerail/roguegrip - pretty light stuff



                  The SS freak back/14" tip weighs in at 7.4 ounces. A Stiffi weighs in at 1.86 ounces. That is almost a 6 ounce swing depending on your choice of barrels. Both are high priced, but one increase your weight by 3 ounces over an average weight barrel, and one cuts almost 3 ounces.

                      When it comes to rails wouldn't a Standard AM/MM rail weight even less than a Milled out RT Pro rail? Or is this a case of looks for a little bit more weight is OK?

                          Good question. The milled rail is less than a standard AM/MM rail, but not by much - 4.7 vs. 5.2 ounces. I went with the larger rail to get more options on the front grip location. From the picture you can see that the grip is almost as far forward as an RT Pro grip. For me, that is a much more comfortable shooting position.

                              Balance is more important than shaving ounces.

                                  Balance is important, I agree 100%. I like to have my markers balance on the web of my thumb, right in front of the grip screw. Still, My RT Pro is very well balanced, but I wish it were lighter.

                                  That's why I went ahead and ordered a SS freak back in spite of the weight. At the rate I am going, might need some weight up front. I am looking for a nice mini drop/asa right now to mount a 45/4500 tank to see just how the lightweight rig does balance.

                                  Not every component is going to be chosen based on weight alone, I just "weighting" it on terms of priority. No pun intended.

                                  After goofing around with some of our markers, I am thinking that you should just build what you like and then use the tank position to balance it. The tank is such a major component as far as weight goes, you can go from perfect balance to crappy just by your choice of drop.

                                      wow, that is so true. i just ditched my Warped Sportz drop in favor of a smaller Shocktech drop, and its done wonders for my balance.
