sigh... fill nipple trials and trubulations

alright, so yesterday i bought a new fill nipple for my pure energy air system. this was replacing the last one, whos inner piston thingy had basically fell apart. i put the fill nipple on, take it to the air station, and it simply would not hold a fill. i took the fill nipple off, pulled off the piston thing, oiled it, and tried again. it still leaked out the entire fill. i had the slotted end of the piston, with the oring, facing out(that is, pointing toward the reg when you screw it in). the nipple was well taped, and it was dfeinately leaking out of the top of the fill nipple. am i doing something wrong here? could it possibly be something wrong with the tank? could the fill nipple just be bad?

your reffering to the fil nipple on the input of the tank right? you do know there is suppose to be a rod with an o-ring on it in there and it should have a bit of oil on it but not too much

The only reason a fill nipple would leak are:

          Cut o-ring
          Dirty o-ring
          Wrong size o-ring
          Bent piston

          Check those.

I had the same thing, on a PMI tank as well.

Basically, check what SeeK said. And in particular, make sure the oring looks... uhm... "regular". Even if there IS an o-ring in there, if it's deformed or something, it won't seal properly.

            Definitely not on the A-Team.

well, i have to assume that the roing that came with the new fill nipple is somehow bad. it is a 32 degrees product, so i guess there is a strong possibility it is crappy. but damn, it sucks when a 15 dollar part doesnt work right out of the box.

Take the stuff to your local paint store and have them fix it. They usually have several sizes of o-rings and can fix it for $1?

I had to do the same thing with my PE and it still works fine.

They should also fill it just to make sure it doesn't leak. When it's fixed ask for a spare and keep it in your toolbox.

You will learn a lot from this experience and this would be one of the reasons to support your local store.
