Regulator Piston Question???

Is there any other way besides air leaking out the back at less than 300 fps that you have an old regulator piston assembly?
I ask cause I am always right on the border with the LVL 10, I can get up to 300 pretty much only with the shortest spring.
It seems like it is close, but I don't want to spend the $20 if I don't have to! Any other way to tell???

I'm not sure if there is any other way to tell, but with the new piston it goes pretty high. When I was messing with my RTP i turned the reg three complete turns AFTER i had chronoed at 280, and it didn't went. I newer shot at that pressure, so I don't know the velocity, but it was probably close to or over 400

The HP piston will not vent any where near 300fps in most cases.
