I'm really not that much of a noob, but I keep hearing about bolt shims and valve shims and how to adjust them to fix leaks and what not, but....I've never actually learned what one is. Could someone please enlighten me?
I'm an idiot, but....what's a shim?

on the inside of the power tube tip right in front of the spacer? If so then I know what it is on the bolt, but what about the valve?Comment

Yeah, its the little metal ring under the power tube tip. As of the valve i have no idea. If there are any shims in the valve i dont know of them right off hand. I never saw any metal shims in my classic valve and i dont know about my X because i havnt taken it apart and dont plan on it any time soon. I hope this helps.Comment

shim = spacer
shims are usually measured in thousandths of an inch.

OK thanks guys for all the help (except for the shin thing..
) The valve shims I was thinking about are with the ULT kit; they go in the on/off to adjust the force of the trigger.

They don't adjust the force, they change the timing for when on/off pin closes the valve.
