If you can't get the gun to operate below 280fps then you need to use a shorter/lighter bolt spring. If you are operating one of the longer bolt springs at the lower end of its operating parameters, then you may get periodic chuffing. The gun will definately be less efficient using the longer bolt springs.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

a new x valve will also have to break in, this takes a few thousand shots. keep the on/off lubes well during this time also. when I got my x valve I had to go up 2 carrier sizes (it would barely fire the way it was put together). Put a light coat of grease on the bolt stem Use the drop test to make sure that the carrier oring is loose enough.

I am using the shortest spring and I took out all shims and I have not tested the fps but it seems to chuff less, however when this problem originated I was using the shortest spring because the red spring would only shoot at 300fps and up. What am I doing wrong.

sounds like the carrier oring is still too tight. if the next size up leaks then maybe something like the body/valve is out of allignment.

the carriers are marked, they have lines and dots. lines are full sizes, dots are half sizes. so go up a couple of lines untill it starts to leak and then go down a dot, there is a diagram around here somewhere. When changing carriers use the same oring. its easy to do, just takes a little patience.

Install the next 1/2 size carrier (using the SAME oring) and see if it leaks. Also, after installing the carrier hold the valve vertical, pull the bolt up and let go of the bolt. If the bolt does not hit the bumper the carrier is probably still to small. If you can't get a carrier that is big enough for the drop test that doesn't leak you may need to start over with a new oring.

Ok well I have gotten it to work but I have not tested the fps. I out in a larger carrier and 1 shim. That along with the smallest spring. The middle spring worked but it chuffed alot so I put the small one in. Any suggestions on how to make the middle spring fit in there nicely.

It's all a function of the velocity. You need to have at least 20 fps between when it just starts shooting and your desired velocity. That should give you a nice soft setup that is reliable and doesn't chuff.
