PMI compressed air tank does it again...

Well, I went to fill my 68/4500 PMI compressed air tank up this afternoon. As soon as the guy who was filling it took it off of the compressor, the fill nipple started leaking (out of the hole). On the way home, it drained about 1000psi or so. The reason I got it filled was to test out my new e-mag :) , so I quickly hooked it up and drained the tank to about 500psi. It was still leaking out of teh fill nipple hole. I drained the rest by pushing the pin valve in. I've had this problem and a leaking problem out of the pin valve almost since I bought the tank a year ago. The pin valve problem is almost solved thanks to PMI's tech department. They shipped me all new parts for free to fix the tank.

Next I proceeded to remove the fill nipple from the tank. The inside of the fill nipple was a bit rusty so I cleaned it up a bit. I think this is my problem (bad fill nipple/fill nipple o-ring). I'll probably call PMI again on monday. What do you guys think the problem is?? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you already found the problem!!! Make sure inside the fill valve is clean and smooth, or it will cut your new o-ring as well!! If you have to replace it, it's the standard male portion of the quick diconnects!!! Hope this helps!!

Congratulations... I have the exact same problem with my PMI tank!

Mine leaked out 1000psi (held 2000), and the next time I filled it leaked all the way down to zero...

How difficult was taking the nipple off? I'm really careful with my stuff and would not want to mess up or damage anything that deals with that much pressure.

As long as it's empty it's the same as any other gas connection. Loosen and tighten with tools but remove and put in with fingers so there isn't a chance of cross threading. I forgot if there is Loctite when putting it back on or else there is teflon tape.

Keep extra o-rings around because that's the only part that should wear.

You may want to pour out any moisture because there shouldn't be any rust unless the moisture filter is missing from the fill compressor.
