Regulator + XValve

Problem: X-valve/lvl10/ULT with 45/45 Pure Energy air source is shooting +/- 10fps (i would expect better than a spread of 20fps from an x-valve)

Possible causes: bad paint, barrel, air tank is poorly regulated

Solutions:
-Used marbilizers and a freak for chrono, so bad paint/barrel is probably not it

What would happen if I incorporated a regulator into the system? Has anyone tried it with an x-valve, and with what results?

Are you using the RT Chrono procedure?

And don't add an additional regulator. It'll starve the valve for air.

Although i didn't quite understand if you're meaning adding a regulator AFTER the bottle or not, I have an X-valve with a Centerflag 201 dynaflow regulator, this meaning that I can adjust the output of the bottle into the X-Valve to about 1200 psi, the more pressure you have into the valve more reactive it'll be, meaning you'll be able to have some serious bounce.

All in all, if your lvl10 is properly setup, and your gun is properly oiled :), output pressure from the HPA bottle makes quite some difference.

sorry, let me clarify: the PMI tank is a preset, so the "reg" in question would be an additional inline reg like a palmer stab or something.

as for the RT chrono procedure, i have never heard of one. if it came with the Xvalve then i probably don't have it, as i bought it used. is there a link on the forum for it?

Silly Dayspring.......adding a secondary reg before the x-valve wont starve it if it is properly set-up. Now it may be redundant, and unneccessary, but i belive the problem starts with paint, always with the paint. That is the ABSOLUTE biggest variable in any paintball gun, not shooting consistant. Even if you just bought the paint, Or even if you used it last weekend, it may not be shooting well this weekend. Then check the air system, find out if your local store can reliably test the tank. Or borrow a buddys screw-in tank and see if the problem goes away. Make sure your x-valve is properly cleaned and lubed also. If you borrow another tank, and it still shoots the same, chances are its the paint. or paint/barrel match. I dont know how many times someone has told me their reg or airsystem is bad, and i test it to find out that it is PERFECTLY fine. So check your paint situation first, visually look at the paint, see a dimple on one ball? if so its proabably on most of them, Bingo, velocity flucuations. is the paint loose in the barrel? will it roll out? Or is it tight in the barrel? can you easily blow the paint out?

Adding a reg to the system will not help you on a mag, the only thing it will help, is lightening your wallet!...lol. Check to see that your lvl10 is lightly lubed also, where the bolt stem goes into the valve, and it may even be that your lvl10 carrier is too tight, but unlikely.

You don't need another reg especially with a rt (it'll starve the valve of air) as dayspring said.

I would stay away from an additional reg. The pressure from the bottle regulator will be fairly consistent. Even if it fluctuates a bit, the regulator on the valve will stabilize the pressure to the proper setting for consistency.

Most often, inconsistent chrono readings are a result of inconsistent paint. A larger barrel compensates for bad paint better than a just right or tight fitting barrel.

Dayspring: Very true.....but i would hope that most AO'ers would know better than to just slap something on and not set it up properly. (I.E. LX)

goforbroke: belive me, when properly set-up, you CAN use a secondary reg on a mag, i did a few times for experimentation purposes. But as i said before, it is unnecessary.
