Autococker cocking rod nut/set screw problem

I bought a psychoballistics lightning recently due to the liquidation of their products (check out actionvillage - there are some sweet deals). I am aware that these markers are not highly thought of etc so don't tell me that I bought a piece of junk - just help if you can.
I want to time it as soon as possible but I ran into a snag right off the bat and it is with the cocking rod. I can screw the rod in and the nut in and place the set screw in the nut but when I try to screw out the cocking rod the set screw fails and the nut twists off leaving the rod in the gun. I can't get the rod out - can anyone offer some solutions to this problem? Am I going to have to locktight this(that'd be such a hassle)?
    Thanks for the help.
