    bolt not always resetting?

specs: level 10 xvalve with ult. 1.5 carrier, short spring, 2 shims in the ult

Problem: My bolt will not always completely reset when I shortstroke, sometimes it will chuff, other times it will shoot and just not completely reset. If i push the bolt back manually it will start to shoot again. I am thinking take a shim out?

yeah take a shim or 2 out and see how that goes, the shims are just there to make the bolt stem seal properly, they do not help the trigger pull (that is an old myth that has been around since early level 7 days...).
Tom was the last of a now extinct breed, a breed of players who build a community, a breed of owners who gave to the sport never taking more than what they deserved. I hope to see you at the feild again some day....

Same problem here, actually. Take shims out of the ULT or the LX?

Try taking the shims out of the bolt.

Yeah, I don't have any shims on my bolt either. Can I put the shims behind the spacer in the power tube to push it further forward so the bolt has more travel time before venting?

First, make sure you are using the correct carrier. Use the largest carrier that does not leak. This is tested by increasing carrier size until a you get a leak. Do not use any powertube shims while doing this. Once you have the proper carrier in place add shims. The correct number of shims will allow the bolt to sit behind the sear without leaking. Any forward movement will product a leak out the vent hole. You can monitor how far the bolt moves before it vents by holding a stick or squeegie down the barrel and pulling and holding the trigger. With the trigger held, gently allow the bolt to move forward. The bolt should start leaking almost immediately if the correct number of shims are in place.

Now you can setup your ULT. Increase the number of ULT shims until you get bolt stick or coughing. Use one or two less than that amount.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.
