the mag is dead... what do i do?

i've made a thread about this on paintballforum, but nobody seems to know what i should do (they all say to send it in) but i really dont feel like sending a 300 dollar part in to somebody i dont know, and on top of that, the repairs are gonna cost me money if i send it in as opposed to fixing it myself.
heres the paste from my other thread on the forum: (by the way i have a stainless retro)
to make a long story short, the other day my mag was shooting about 220 so i turned it up about 3/8ths of a turn and it basically vented half the air out of my tank instantly (out the back of the valve) , and there was no venting before i made the turn. and then after that i turned it all the way out and it still vented for a little bit but then stopped. i inspected the back half for all signs of damaged o rings, there were none, EXCEPT for where the two halves screw together (i think this is the reg seat???) and i heard online i should replace the reg seat if it started venting before 300 fps... so i guess i need to replace it... unless theres another way to get my velocity up... im using the shortest lvl 10 spring because the medium doesn't work... so im thinking this is as high as my velocity will get? maybe if i replace the reg seat i will be able to use my medium spring?

    then a few days later:

eh. its worse. i just aired it up today and it was shortstroking like crazy... oiled the crap out of it... so much that when it fires a cloud of oil comes out... im using pmi marker oil, which is what the proshop recomended for me. i tried upping the velocity... if i up it anymore it starts venting. still shortstroking, still venting like a mofo out the back (without warning sometimes) and im using the shortest bolt spring in my lvl 10, with the biggest possible carrier. like i said, its oiled PLENTY.

somebody please help, i need my mag ready to roll by this sunday, its xball time.

by the way: thank you agdkid for trying to help me online, but it still doesn't work.

You probably need a regulator piston...not a reg seat. I have them. Email me [email protected]

there is a rubber diphram inside that goes bad , everyone usually just swaps out the entire piston AKA shotgun shell in my parts.

im sorry if i sounded like an idiot, i didn't mean to come off that way. this is kinda what i was looking for. i didn't want to purchase a new part to find that the part didn't fix the problem. yes, i realize that these people are very experienced (why i came here, because everyone on pbf just said to send it to agd or people on here but i didn't want to do that) and i respect that, but is it ok that i just wanted to know WHY the part needed replacing so incase another problem like this comes up i know what to do?

i just ordered a new piston, just so you guys know. thank you tunaman and peewee for the info.

I got a classic mag and reading the minimag instruction manual helps alot with trouble shooting . the classic/minimag instruction manual is like 10000 X better then the RT and newer manuals.

check it out online at http://www.airgun.com/Images/automan.pdf if ya are interested.

and ya i tihnk it is the regulator piston o ring that needs replacing.

the regulator piston comes out back of gun under where you screw in the volosity screw.

              good luck on the mag.

You are most likely short stroking becasue you can't get your operating pressrue up to where it is needed. If you do, it vents out the back. This definately looks like you need a new regulator piston assembly. You are on the correct path in ordering a new one of these. They do wear out, plus the older ones were set to a lower pressure which weren't meant for the higher pressures associated with the level 10 bolts.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

as some of you know i got this gun from my uncle, who used the mag primarily for shooting unwarry people or even people who wandered onto his beach at dangerously high velocities. he was extremely abusive to it, and at the same time knew absolutly nothing of it.

i have some supporting evidence leading up the the fact that he knew nothing about it.

"hey uncle tom, can this gun opperate on co2?" (i didn't know anything about rt mags at the time) "well sure it can, the only reason i use nitrious is for extra velocity"

"so, now that this gun is mine, how should i go about maintaining it?" "well, im not sure. i just put it in the lake when i was done using it."

"what kind of oil do you use on the gun?" "it doesn't matter... i usually just use wd-40"

"so have you ever used it in a tourney" "no, i just use it to punish my dog and get the dumb drunks off my beach."

                  oh jeeze^

no wonder the piston is worn out!!!!

oh yeah, i forgot to ask what venting is SUPPOSED to be like, since i've never seen it.
lets say im turning it up too high. will it vent before i fire with the soon to be raised velocity, or will it start venting after i fire? will the venting be a constant slow steam of air or will i be shooting and all of a sudden it just starts venting really really really quickly? (whats happening now when i get around 240 fps)

lol ya i think the mag needs come love. Perhaps strip it down and replace the o-rings. get a parts kit it comes with all of em. as for the venting it happens when the pressure in your gun exceeds a certain amount. If you connect your compressed air tank and turn it on and crank up your volostiy without shooting it will still vent out the little hole in the back where you crank up the volosity. when you crank it up and it starts to vent you can turn it down and it will stop venting. ( no shooting is required)

If WD-40 was used, you should disassemble the mag and replace all orings. If it constantly vents above a certain velocity/pressure and stops when below that setting, then the problem is a bad/worn regulator piston assembly.
