    Smart Valve...whats the deal?

There is a used mag sitting at the proshop right now for a certain sum of money. I just picked it up to look at it and i noticed it had a smart valve on it. What exactly IS a smart valve? Is it anything special? Is it worth a good bit?

I think those were just valves made by Smart Parts.

If it has a weird big box on the side of it, it's a modded valve. It's supposed to change the gun into high volume / low pressure. At the time they claimed it gave you another 15 feet or something like that ... all I ever noticed that it did was make the gun quieter.

I can't remember if some were sold complete with a valve etched "Smart Valve" although I believe they did. If it doesn't have the box on the side then someone might have just removed it.

The idea was to enlarge the valve chamber& make it low pressure. SP claimed it would allow you to shoot farther too.

It did allow a CO2 user to shoot farther, as they would tip the gun down to force liquid CO2 into the chamber. The velocity would spike on shooting and you'd shoot farther.

Not worth it outside of collector's value.

I thought that liquid CO2 cheat was used on Magic Box, not on Smart Valve?

Smart Valve is the 8 hole drilling of the stock valve
Blackbox is the ...well black box on the side which was alledged to make things better but was used to cheat.
Often the two were combined but they were two different things.
Tyger (I think) posted a pic of the Smart Parts ad ages ago with a description of what they (both) were supposed to do.

In the mid 90's Smart Parts sold Mags. They also offered two mods. 8 Hole Mod and Black box.

The 8 Hole mod was when they took your perfectly good stock reg and drilled 7 additional holes in it. This was thought to be better because the old level 6 (and from what I was told a few early level 7) valves the holes did not line up between the valve and the reg.

The Black box was a small box that was hung on the side of the air chamber. The idea was to make the air chamber larger. With a larger air chamber they figured you could lower the pressure.

Both of these mods did nothing to the performance but made SP money.

Shortly after AGD got sick of trying to fix these valves that had been modified by SP. So they made valves for smart parts that already had the 8 hole mod done and had a larger air chamber internally and it was marked as the "Smart Mag". Again, there was no performance change in this valve.

It's a good colectors item, but no better than a normal classic valve.

If the price is right I might be willing to buy it off ya. It's one of the few AGD products I don't have.

Muzik man, Tyger, and Beemer all hit the nail on the head. Honestly, there is a bit of shootdown, but if you take your time and aim and don't outshoot your gun, then you are okay. I have the SP Magic Box Mag and it performs just the same as my classic mag. Also, my SP mag has the 8-hole mod which does make a bit of a difference as well as the custom on/off top (see pic in ad above). I particularly bought the SP mag because it was unique and not like the other 4 mags they had for sale. As stated before, you are just getting a classic mag. Don't expect it to shoot like an X-valve does.
