    Mag won't recock

    Hello all,

I just got a used powerfeed Automag with a 68 Automag valve. I've ran into a little issue with my gun. When I fire the bolt won't go back all the way. Thus giving me a nasty hiss sound. It's almost like the bolt is sticking but I've looked and can't see where it would be sticking. Just wanted to know if anybody would have any idea of what it may be. Thanks.

Remove the valve and check the spring on the bolt. If it is NOT longer than the bolt, replace it.

Check out this thread and see if it applies to your situation... Sometimes the tightness of the field strip screw and front frame screw can cause bolt stick.

It could also be as simple as a power tube spacer.

The spring is most definitely the stock spring and is longer than the bolt so I don't think that is where my trouble lies. I'm pretty sure I don't have the screws over tightened. The screw holding the valve in place is only hand tightened and I'm kinda lacking in the upper body strength category. I was playing around with it some more and noticed that once it gets stuck if I smack the end of the barrel the bolt goes back to it's original place. The only thing I could think of it being is the spring getting stuck on the sear but I'm not real sure if it could even do that. The only other possible thing I could think of it being would be me being low on air, which I am, but I would figure not having a high enough input pressure would make it not fire or only half fire seeing as the bolt spring is pushing backwards and in theory should take the bolt all the way back faster when met with less resistance.

Check the wire nubbins on your barrel make sure they arent bent over and hanging on the bolt.

I'm actually thinking now that it might be the on/off valve. I was just messing around with it with my sisters tank which actually has air in it and once I fired it the bolt went back all the way but it kept leaking air. It wasn't pushing the trigger back out all the way so I'm gonna try replacing that and see what happens.

Okay I am fairly new to mags as well and I was having the same problem with the bolt sticking. After messing around with all the screws fiddling with the on/off etc. to no avail I found out it was the barrel back that I was using. I don't know why but as soon as I switched backings my problem stopped. I was using a JJ performance Edge twist lock kit with my minimag. Just another thing you might want to consider.

Doubt it's the barrel. It's got the stock barrel on it. And after fiddling with it some more I was able to get the bolt to go back all the way but it was still leaking. Went ahead and bought a new on/off assembly from Airgun and will see if that does the trick.

It wouldn't hurt to replace the bolt spring. They are consumable parts that wear out and get weak. Another problem could be a powertube spacer that is too short for the powertube oring.
Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.

I was correct in my assumption. Got the new on/off assembly yesterday and gave it a whirl today and it works like a charm.
