Level 10 Backing Washer

What would happen if I didn't have one? I just bought a mag(not shooting), and I took apart the X-valve, and I don't think it has a backing washer. Is it mandatory to have? Or can I just load up on shims?
Oh, and waht color are backing washers? In the diagrams, they look gray/black.

if you mean the white washer that goes in the power tube before you put the carrier in, and you dont have one, then you need one. I'd suggest ordering one from the AGD store.
