    Power Feed vs. Vertical Feed

    Hey AO, I have been thinking... I know the power feed was originally designed to make up for a performance flaw in the vertical feed where the last few rounds won't feed because the discharging air will make the balls bounce up. So my question is this, why did we go from power-fed Automags to now the ULE's vertical feed which is almost how all markers are fed these days. Wouldn't a power-feed still be preferred? Just a thought, thanks in ahead.

          Wouldn't a power-feed w/ a faster loader still be better than the vertical feed?

              the difference is negligible, the amount of friction from the powerfeed on the balls coupled with the fact that its not a "straight" drop doesnt affect the gravity fed cap of about 66bps. What i mean is if you had a tube 10 feet tall one paintball stacked on the other, provided your gun could fire that fast, and you could pull the trigger that fast you could get 66bps in a vert feed.. in a powerfeed I doubt that number would be much different. If anything the powerfeed maybe more consistent because of a longer continuous stack of balls versus a short feedneck vert setup. As previously stated though the newer loaders dont really care about all that and the lower profile verts are more designed for balance and providing a smaller target.

                  Ah OK, makes sense. Thanks a lot. I was just bored in my ECE Programming class this evening and was thinking about how mags went from vert to power to vert.

                      No problem.. also when you think about it.. warps and q loaders feed stupid fast and they dont care what setup you have.. even horizontally fed. These types of loaders replicate a long ball stack that obviously would be impractical if it was loaded vertically into the gun (could you imagine a 10 or 12 inch feedneck?). If you could find out the exact pressure being exerted on the balls in a helical feed system like the q loader it would tell you a lot about how much difference a vert or power setup would have. Again I would say negligible. I love powerfeeds personally.. allows you to sight over the barrel.

                              And, with those modern loaders, people don't need to deal with the unbalancedness and sometime awkardness (like, with a powerfeed right shooting out of the right side of a bunker) a powerfeed can create.. And I thought that the first mags were direct feed, but not vert feed?

                                  The first mags were direct feed and during faster firing rates the balls would bobble in the ball stack. This was due to blowback up the feedneck.. This was alleviated by a hole drilled in the bottom of the feedneck close to the body. Then came powerfeed.. no bobble.. and a conventient plug to "turn off" the flow of paintballs as a safety feature. However modern loaders dont care what orientation your feedneck is..

                                      Ah ok, it looked to me like the old style mags were vertical fed (albeit off at an angle), I didn't know it was referred to as direct feed. Thanks for all the posts And I personally do like the powerfeed; looks and use, nice to get a lot of input on the subject
