Are there any problems ever associated with it? I just got a valve that had the back drilled this way. Also, what is this mod actually supposed to do?

back in the day ... leve 6 mags the holes in the back were smaller and did not line up so it was assumed to affect the recharge rate of the mags so some people got the idea of drilling 8 holes so the holes would line up and thus increase the recharge rate of the mag .... its not really going to affect performance one way or the other.
