Anyone use Wayne black oxide for a SS body?

I saw this ad on here the other day for these guys so I checked it out. Looks like a great base for a home paint and laquer job. Anyone ever try them?

    The site is here:

I think you'll find that it won't work on stainless steels. Or at least not all grades of stainless steel. Oxide finishs rely on a process of actually rusting the surface and then chemically altering that rust to form a more corrosion resistant layer that just happens to be black in color.

It would be best to email them and say which type of stainless you're wanting done and see what they come back with. I seem to remember reading that our automags are a 308 or 306 stainless alloy.

There are blackening chemicals available at gunsmithing supply places...notably Brownells. I personally have no experience with doing it, however every time I've looked into the subject Brownells keeps coming up in conversation.

I looked into those too some years back. Again they rely on the chemical's ability to chemically change it all in one go to a form of iron oxide or other iron compound that naturally has a blackish color. It may or may not work with stainless.

Yeah I think the blackening process is best left to the professionals. What I am thinking of with this is that since this finish is relatively tough and absorbs paints and such well maybe it could be used as a base (seeing as how black has been done) to do something spectacular (like an acid wash look or a fade) with the stainless bodies. Then you could finish it off with a thick coat of laquer. Not the most practical (like custom anno is pphhhffffttt) but it would look pretty. Maybe . . .
