Revive the Automag or time for a new marker?

Well I haven't played in about 5 years and my brother is probably getting a shocker NXT. My first (good) gun was an Automag back in like 96 or so (prob earlier). Then about 2000 or so I picked up a shocker SF (yea the old skool shoebox style). Anyhow he wants me to join him and I was thinking of redoing either the shocker, automag or just buying a new gun. I always completely broke down the gun after everyday of play, but I have my doubts as to the condition of the internals. With all the new upgrades I think I'd be looking at least 500 bucks into the mag (lvl 10, x valve, new body/grip) and I could get the shocker back up for like $100. The shocker rocked in its day and felt like a great improvement over my mag that I'm afraid of going that route (redoing the mag) and crying in the end like why did I do that But I like the idea of throwing back to the old days.

    Opinions?

    Depends on why you're upgrading.

Are you upgrading to compete with the Shocker NXT in the Balls per second category?

If so your best bet would be to sell your old mag and shocker and add some money to buy a top end electro. Your old shocker can be out shot by a newer mag, but it'll cost more than a hundred bucks. Plus it's probably cheaper to buy a new mag from Tuna with the x-valve and level ten then it would be to upgrade your old mag. Now a mag can be pretty fast gun but you won't get that performance as cheaply as you would with an electro. Of course the mag will be more reliable.

Well, if you took good care of the mag (sounds like you did) you could probably take it out right now, oil it up, and shoot it. So thats something.

There are some nice electros out there now. Im not a big fan of electros (except my emag) but the Invert Mini is pretty sweet. And priced well to boot.

If you still have the old shoebox shocker, you should bust that out at the field and go Ego hunting. You will be the coolest kid on the field.

Or, just get that old mag up and running. I bet all you'll have to do is shoot a few drops of paintball oil through it and it will be working fine.

You could buy a used retro valve and intelliframe/Chimera/Airwalk etc frame and do a Pneumag conversion if you want to do something different, and you have some technical savvy and patience. Depends on how high you want your rate of fire to be, personally, i'd keep the shocker and do a Pneumag conversion, electro fire power but all mechanical innards and all the reliability of a mech Mag. The beauty of a Mag is its simplicity. Not a whole lot to go wrong with it so it's very reliable, there's also still a wealth of upgrades available for it, so you can customise it at your leisure. A Pneumag conversion will suck up about $100 of your hard earned
cash plus whatever the frame costs ($100) . How much do you really want to spend on a marker? At the end of the day, it's still the man behind the marker, not the marker!!
P.s. you could even make your own 20 bps electro frame.
P.p.s. Sorry about my ramblings, but i'm a bit drunk!! Hic!

If all you play is rec. then I'd say go Automag. My mag is the first marker that I bought and after stripping it down and putting it back together, reading the straightforward manuals on the x-valve and lvl 10 bolt, and getting the maintainance kits (for x-valve and lvl 10 bolt), I feel confident that the few times I play a summer the marker will always be up and running. If per chance it does need maintainance I know I can to it myself and it will mostly involve changing o-rings, oiling it, and doing minor tuning. Simple, reliable and you won't have to worry if the batteries are good.

Personally I converted both my mags to electros one has a hyper frame with t board and X valve, it was the money pit but WELL worth every penny plus it only takes about 5 minutes to put the manual trigger back on it in the event of a failure which has never happened.

i picked up a boo yaah off ebay for 80 bucks and converted my back up to an electro for my girl friend all total I have about 180 bucks in it the mag came from ebay with a diamond labs 8 hole reg, i used a RT on off and it has no probs with 15 bps with 900 input (threw the hyper frame on it and got 19 with no probs 20 was hit or miss)

the only problem with going much over stock is that your gona have to drop some cash on a good force feed loader to avoid a lvl 10, a halo with a speed wheel fed her classic no probs at 19 but i only let her paly with it at 13 because of paint costs at the moment

got 29 out of my xvalved mag but i play at 9bps on semi to force my self to only take the "good" shots

Raindown i own a ULE Mag and a Angel G7. If i want to throw a lot of paint i take the G7. I can honestly say if i had to get rid of one of them i would keep my Mag (and i love my G7).
