    Cutting Carbon Fiber

Recently I've come to own a small bit of carbon fiber which I'd like to play around with. I know it's a tough material, but what is the most effective way to cut it?

As far as I know it's seriously carcinogenic if you breath the fiber in when it's being cut. I've heard that throwing it on a mill (or lathe if it's circular) can be extremely hard on the cutting tools. The only method i've ever seen used is taking a router to it. Hope this helps.

yeah its very hazardous to breath the dust in

Oh I know the fiber particles are deadly, I'm just not sure what the most effective tool is to cut it with. I may have some diamond tipped blades in my workshop. Problem I think I'm going to have is my machines aren't going to be 'specific' enough to do what I need done. Most of the machines I have I use for big projects, nothing like this.

It might be easier to give advice if you tell us what shape/thickness the CF is, and what type of cutting with you need to do

E-Mag grips, and specifically the display window. Cutting the carbon fiber to be shaped for the frame is no trouble, it's cutting a space for that window that will be with my equipment.

I really don't know what kind of equipment you have, but I'd say if you have access to a mill that would do the trick. Since you're cutting such a small amount of it I don't think the tooling will have a problem with it. I'd say once you find a way to clamp it in, just run an endmill that has a diameter equal to the height of the window along the carbon fiber, taking off very little each time. A carbide endmill would definitely be best. If that's no help, PM luke or some professional machinist.

it can be cut with a router, but it would be WAY bettter if it had a dust collector

I would go with waterjetting because milling would cause chipping and hazardous dust. I've never milled carbon fiber, but i did mill fiberglass reinforced isolation plates for plastic injection moulds. I can tell ya, it's nasty stuff all those razorsharp fibers...

You can LB cut fiber, keep an eye out if you cannot find a waterjet. Regardless--- be safe, its really bad to get Carbon Dust it into your lungs.
