    Pump Handle

I figured I'd flex my muscles a bit here and take a stab at a Pump Handle...

Sent the file out to be RP'd (Rapid Prototyped) this afternoon...

Here are the solidworks screen prints:

    Nice!

How long have you been using Solidworks?
How long did it take you to draw that?

I first stepped into the world of SolidWorks back in '05, it's a wonderful tool for getting the ideas from my head to the paper (without the paper :) )

how long did it take?... I dont know exactly, with all the measuring, and double checking the measuring (thank you Tom for designing your products in ENGLISH units!) and really this is the fifth revision, I'd say probably somewhere around four hours.

My guy says it should be going into the SLRS machine today

well things have been unbelieveably hectic around these parts lately, just as you think you've got some fun time to yourself something else gets thrown on your desk!

                nonetheless we have a prototype!!!

I just went down to the SLS Machine with Tony tonight to get the pump! It's a little late so we skipped the dye, I'll have to get to that tommorrow or sometime this week...

                Here goes the pictures:

what hardener are you going to use?

from my experience with powder printing, that stuff can be pretty brittle.

the ABS is the really cool stuff

Hardner won't be neccessisary, maybe the technology has advanced since you worked with it? I dont know.

alot of the RP's get painted or other cosmetic alterations once they've been made but if something is in fear of breaking they usually remind people that it's a protoype.

in general the Nylon is just that, Nylon. How the part is made: layer thickness, time allowed, orientation, all affect how the piece turns out. This was made with pretty thin layers, it was a 16 hour build so it's pretty solid. also we rotated it 5 degrees offset in both the X and Y axis to avoid forces directly upon a shear plane.

                            got it.
glad to hear that it's nylon.

from the pics it looked like the stuff that is essentially sand and glue.
not sure if you've ever worked with it but it is crap. the upside is that it's cheap.

here at GM they use the tough white abs and the more brittle translucent stereolith where the laser essentially writes the layers into liquid.

we have a machine that does this as well, however I am not familiar with it. neat stuff, there was a show on Discovery channel awhile ago where that machine (our machine) was used by the FBI to reconstruct a jaw for a skull found in a murder case... the detectives were able to model the victims face off of the RP and a match was made from a missing persons list.
