    Machinists please help

Say for example I wanted to make an after-market grip frame (or other part) for an existing paintball marker (like many small companies do). In order for the frame to fit and work properly it would have to match the dimensions of the stock grip frame in certain key areas. How would I go about finding out what those dimensions are?

If I asked AGD (for example) for part drawings for the Automag with the intention of making after market products for it, would they give/sell it to me?

Can you get part drawings from the US patent office? If so, can I copy certain aspects of a part, change others and file for a new patent?

Do people just measure the parts and make their own CAD drawings from their measurements?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you go grab the AGD sluggo drawing and turn on the layers, there is a AGD Intelliframe hidden. Not sure how you'd get the tolerances on those basic measures, but its a start. Maybe Rogue will tell you

Generally speaking, you buy one and measure it. Every part that comes into my hands I like to file into my cabnet its basics before I whore it off and or lose it.

Grab a set of calipers and start measuring . All the other options are likely much more work than its worth, esp. the patent thing. The slug body drawing is also a great start, but if you're going to be drawing up your own stuff, it is good practice to learn a bit of reverse engineering. my 2 cents

          Thanks everyone!

I figured that was how it was being done, and that's how I'll do it. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some commonplace system where companies give out their drawings to after-market companies to promote upgrade-ability on their products.

How would you go about finding out what type of threads something uses? For example, if I wanted to make an autococker threaded barrel how would I know what the actual size of cocker threads are? Is there a tool or set of tools that measures that?

I want to buy a digital caliper. Does anyone have any recommendations?
