mags will run fine on 12 g only if you are using a classic valve, rt valves recharge so fast that they will internally freeze if c02 is used.

heres a pic of one just in case you were interested on how they are usually set up:

The stock automag valves usually give 12-15 shots on a 12g, which is very rate dependent (shoot fast, get fewer shots).

A palmers stabilizer is said to improve that to around 20 if adjusted correctly. Also, valves with a smaller dump chamber, either by design or modification, get shots in the 20s as well.

I've never seen a sydarm up close, but from the pictures, it looks like the chamber is shortened on them.

A mag pistol would benefit from a check valve and sacrificing one 12g to initially 'charge' the system.
I believe you can get phantom ASA quick changers with check valves installed cheaply.

Another option is to add spacers to the dump chamber to take up volume.

the dump chamber is the area in front of the on/off( in this animation it's to the right of it) It is a chamber that holds a specific amount of air before being released through the bolt.

On the pistol mag picture i posted it uses a modified powerfeed body with a stock class feed tube welded on.

If you choose to take this route i suggest buying a stainless centerfeed mag body and sending it to luke at luke's customs and he will remove the feedneck and weld the stock class feed tube in place. Im not sure what the pricing is for the service but i think it's $25-$35.

this is his website if you are interested:

                  Ahh how I love dejavu
I did exactly what you are thinking of about 4 years ago. Not exactly the easiest thing I had ever done, but it was fun to play with. The big points I learned after doing the pistol conversion were thus:

-Yes do start with the classic valve and keep plenty of extra seals on hand.

-While I never tried, you would also want to experiment with compressed air 12ish grams, as they would be more reliable than CO2

-If you go CO2, build in an expansion chamber of sorts to assure that all of it gets into the gasseous state as its a pain when your velocity is really erratic.

-If you start with a centerfeed stainless body, its made from 304 stainless (not 403), and make sure you puchase the correct tubing otherwise it wont weld.

-Lay down a complete design that you review carefully to make sure it will work, that way your mag doesn't have an unintended hole in it.

This is the begining of a long list of stuff to consider.
Apparently the old pic is still out there:
The perfect spot for the person who likes to build their own markers or tinker.

Best of luck, and I hopre it looks good in the end.
