    paintball cannon?

ok i want to make a paintball cannon
but i cant find any good directions on the web
i have a few ideas ...one problem these ideas might do one of a few things
work too well:make the balls or grapeshot fly way too fast
    explode
not work well enof: cause the ball to roll out
    or work just fine

the problem is (arcording to that) i have a 1:4 chance of it owrking and a 1:4 chance of getting sriously injured

so what i was thinking (i want to make a cannon useing a ball valve and that could fire more then oneshot with out recharging the air (useing co2 or hpa)

ok now for the desine (i dont know how to post a pic of the basic blue print)

a 20oz co2 tank hooked to a remote : then hook the remote to a ball valve (a smaller one) then hook that valve to a metal tube (with a same diamiter as the barrel) that will hook into a large ball valve (as large as barrel) then hook that in to the barrel
(this cannon is going to have a 2-3 in barrel and is going to shoot waterballons filled with paint (i can do it it is possable)

ok the problems are i dont know how big to make the airchmber (the metal pipe) and also i dont know if the pipe can take the pressuer of the co2 (i could use a regulater to fix that right?)
and i dont know at what fps this will shoot

so if any of you know of any site with GOOD (keyword) blueprints or you have your own
or you can do all the calaculations (for the pressuer and how much is needed to propell X amount of paint)
    it would be great
    thanks

(also i would like to make a sprinkler vavle cannon when i become more advanced at this so if you have the instructions for one of those)

I've built a few of these. But my blueprints suck. If you can wait a few days, I can attach pics of my setup.

In the mean time: You should use a gate valve (like the kind that you hook up your garden hose up to, but flat) instead of a ball valve to control the flow into the chamber. You get a lot more control, and you don't have to deal with ball valves freezing up (I had this happen to me, wasting my tank).

Also, I use a 2" barrel that is 18" long, and I have about 9" x 1" (black pipe) chamber. Make sure you use wicked strong metal for the chamber so it dosen't explode.

C02 is not an ideal gas (p1V1 = p2v2), and I'm too lazy to dig out my old thermodynamics book, so you'll just have to settle with knowing that it will work.

WARNING MAX PSI IS 100psi or you WILL BLOW THE VALVE!!!!!
there's no increase in preformace any way 90 Psi is Best.

I made one that ran of a Co2 tank, so it had rapidfire capabilities, at least for a few shots since it ate CO2. I took the Stabilizer off to use on marker though since it was not that useful.

I must warn you to be careful because ESPECIALLY working with CO2 you should really know what you're doing. Remember you're going to be shooting this at people. Mine was fully chronoable.

I tried to post a picture, i have one under the size limit but it still won't work.

Personaly I feel that cannons that use a full 12g CO2 cartrage for each shot are the safest. That way you can make the chamber and barrel set sizes and be sure that you'll crono the same for each shot.

Sure, 12g aren't grown on trees but how many times are you really going to be fireing it? $2-$3 for 12 shots isn't too much.

With that said, regulated (80-100psi) air is a great propelent.

If you go to http://www.spudtech.com/ and spend some time looking through the Theory section you'll find good info about barrel to chamber ratios. Basicly for paintball needs a .75/1 to 1.5/1 chamber to barrel ratio will get you in the 200fps-300fps with nerf rockets. Take a look at some of the cannons he has for sale and you should be able to figure out how to make them yourself.

Here's the formula for getting your barrel and chamber's volume:

                          Volume = Pi x radius sq. x length--(in inches)
Example: 12" piece of 4" ID pipe.
                          3.14 x 2 x 2 x 12 = 150.72 cubic inches of volume.
