Seeking Machine Tools and Spare Time in Northern VA

I've been tossing around a simple valve design for about two years now, and I want to turn what's on paper into chunks of aluminum, stainless, and delrin so I can have something in my hands instead of only in my head. I don't have access to a lathe and a mill, and I don't like the prospect of working up engineering drawings, sending them to a full-blown "one off" shop, and then watching my bank account disappear when I get their bill.

Any fellow AO'ers out there in the northern Virginia area have a nice lathe and mill? If so, do you feel like fiddling around a bit? I'm thinking we'll need to be able to mill, drill, bore, and possibly thread aluminum (probably 6061-T6), stainless (316?) and delrin, each up to 1.25 inches in diameter... five parts in all, I think.

I check this forum a couple of times a week or so. Leave a note if ya feel so inclined. :)

I'm in southern Wisconsin(no day trips to my shop:)) but I do have my own home machine shop with all if not most of what you are looking for.I have a smithy 13/24 granite with DRO Mill Drill Lathe. I always have spare time and enjoy making metal chips.I do custom conversions of mags, and some part work on the side. If you have a print, I can help with the machining if you supply the materials and any special cutters/bits/taps ect other than what I have already. I only charge 10$ per set-up and $10 per hour, which is 1/4 the price of a full machine shop. LMK Rick

I'd love to find the same thing - I'm in NoVA also. I've always wanted to open a "shop class" business- where you setup a complete workshop and sell memberships or lease access by the hour. Until I get venture capital :) I guess I'm at the mercy of others...

Let me know if you find anything.

      Thanks,

      -Calvin
