    Wanna build a hopper....

Like the title says..... I wanna build a hopper!!!

I'm sure everyone has thought about this, but I wanna TRY and make it happen. What I really wanna do is basically put the internals of a HALO or EVO II into something small like a Revvy. Not necessarily the same housing as a Revvy, but something as small as one.

Anyone have any comments about me trying to make this a success?

something like this? For reference, the flip top cap is the same size as a 140ball tube.

Although, I just read that you want to do something like an EVOII. That would be cool. Instead of the large tub in the EVO, do a small tub that would hold like only 4 balls with a 4 bladed impeller (instead of 6). Look at the A-5 loader, that might work as the base, then attach a smallish hopper on top of it and convert it to work with a servo. Just some random thoughts.

By looking at your picture I have come up with a new idea!!
I have an old Revvy lying around and I was thinking that I could take and modify the internals of of an Evo II to fit in a Revvy. You know... how an Evo II has the propellers and the clear plastic piece (don't know what to call it) that the balls are shot into... well I wanna put the into a Revvy. Also I wanna put the clear "ramp" (that rolls the balls into the paddles) into it, and put the batteries in the excess space under the "ramp". Do you guys think THAT would work?

My friend just had a great idea.
Because, he saw that I was gonna use a Revvy he suggested that since I am going to build my own hopper then why not make my own housing for it????
Now what I need to know is how to mold a thick enough plastic once I am done with it? What I had thought about is making the housing out of meither metal or wood just for the prototype and then put a plastic coating around it to see what it would look like and if I liked it, then mold the plastic without the metal or wood.
Question for anyone........... Should I start out with "small" internals (like a Revvy) and then work my way up, or just go all out the first time????

You could use something like expanding spray foam, get yourself a good blob of it, then shape it, then cover it in fiberglass and resin. Messy though. As long as you mold in some "tabs" you can then cut the whole think in half (revo style) and remove the foam mold and install your internals.

Is my hopper that Ghetto? Yes. But it is a working prototype, not finished.

What do you think would be the best thing to cut out the foam with?

Once you've got a good size chunk of foam to work with you can roughly shape it with a hack saw, serated knife, electric knife (the best) or something like that. Once the rough shape is done, you can finish the shape with rough (60grit) sand paper or a rasp. It doesn't have to be very smooth (fine sandpaper) before you apply the fiberglass and resin. The expanding foam, as seen on last nights Monster House and Monster Garage, is pretty stiff once it sets so it's easy to cut and shape. The stuff used on Monster house is spray on, the stuff on Monster Garage was a two part liquid. Both yield nearly the same result. You can buy it in a spray can too. I've used the stuff to make speaker enclosures in tight areas in cars.

What I think would be easier is to use the two-part liquid. What I would like to do is to go ahead and make a mold of my "hopper". Then pour the liquid into the mold, and then break the mold off of the "hopper".
