Makin a bolt for the Mag

I'm tryin to make a new bolt for my mag for a project that I'm doing. I have access to a Lathe and a mill (how that will help I dunno) but anyways...
It needs to be longer than the original bolt. I tried tapping and threading 2 normal ones together but kept breaking taps, so I think I'll try to make one.
First off, can I use Aluminum, or will that wear too fast? Could I maybe just make part of it out of SS? Also, how should I make the inside hole? I think that the regular mag bolt is made by heat-fitting the outside with the inside. So how should I go about doing this? Any pointers? Thanks a lot

Mags don't shoot darts... they shoot nails.

it depends on what exactly you want to do with the bolt. I think the best thing to do would be, unless this is what you want to mod, is keep the L10/L7 bolt pin (the pin inside of the bolt that controls pressure release and stuff), the L10 one is just threaded right in to the back of the wall in the front of the L10 bolt. As for making the inside hole, just bore it out with the proper sizing, a lathe would work best for this as you can leave the piece on after you've shaped the outside, and with the tail stock get a nice clean centered hole drilled. As for the front of the bolt where the air exits, you could just use the mill and mill out the holes so that air can get out of the front (duh).

Good luck with whatever you are making... dang i need a lathe...

It pretty much needs to be SS. Also the specs on a bolt are prettttty tight so I dont know if you're going to be able to get it working right. Have fun though
