    sandblasting tank

theoretically, what would happen if one was to sandblast a steel CO2 tank, to get that nice, shiny look? I'm worried about the strength of the steel after I sandblast it. I think it should be ok, but I wanna get a second, or third, etc...opinion, before I do it. actually, I don't want an opinion, as much as i want someone that knows what they're talking about. any information would be GREATLY appreciated

If you look at the label on the tank, it says somehthing like

"do not alter or modify in any way"

There is a reason they do that. It's called saving you from making poor choices.

Just don't be suprised when you go to get it filled and they refuse becase you have painted over the hydro dates.

or because you're paint mysterously corroded the tank to the point where it blows up and kills you and the oither 11 people in the area... well maby not...

just make a tank cover that can be removed, it has numerous benefits over actually directly altering the tank itself.

Sandblasting wont make ur tank shiney, itll make it look like raw alluminum.

this is what itll look like if you sandblast it. But with sand itll be a bit rougher, i bead blasted mine and its all smooth and pretty.

i wouldnt' do it either...if you remove the coating then raw steel will rust really fast..almost overnight and it would make more work for u than u really want to get into plus it is dangerous once u have a rusty tank....

You know, there are different mediums with which to blast you're tank. The main reason for not sandblasting it is that it makes the metal more brittle (that is why you do car restorations by hand). Anyhoo, other mediums, such as crushed walnut shells, or glass beads can be used to achieve the same goal without all of the trauma to the tank.

at a local dive shop a few years ago a scuba (hpa tank) blew up while being filled due to the owners body shop job now i am not sure what he did in the procees of refinishing his tank and i am not sure the about the differances in filling air and Co2 but i saw the scares on th guy who was filling it and i have to say dont do it cause your not just messing with your safty your messing with the saftey of anyone who fills it and you don't have that right
