I bought a Smithy a few month back and I'm very satisfied with it, I was also considering the Shoptask machine.
I would sugest you post what budget and space you have for the machine as well as any experience you have, that way you can get better advice.
If you already have a well stocked up garage then things are easier than if you are starting with an empty space. Basic tools like a bench grinder, band saw, belt sander, ect will also help in your projects and is easier if you already have them in your garage. Also hand tools like wrenches and hex keys.
In the time i've owned the machine I have learned that you also need an accesory budget, since you will only get the basics with the machine and you will imediately find out you need more stuff to complete certain projects (ex. V-blocks, extra cutters, measuring tools, clamps, ect.)
Check out this link for some more info:
Also if you want more help you can pm or email me and i will tell you more about the things ive learned in the past months.

Yay! Someone linked to a thread of mine!
ANyway, I have a Speedway Series (?) Mill from Homier, and a HF Lathe. Without too much time working with them I can't reccommend/rebuke them, but they look good
. Go to this site:
Mini-lathe.com is an extensive information resource for the 7×10, 7×12, 7×14 and 7×16 mini lathes. This site is intended primarily to help new and prospective owners understand the capabilities, limitations and frustrations of these tools and how to modify and fine-tune them to get results you might expect only from a much more expensive lathe.
They have lots of info fer ya.

Smithy website:
Quality, low cost, accurate and efficiency are built into our tools - they are guaranteed to pay their own way. Do you want the best lathe, mill drill combo on the planet? Our commitment is to provide the type of cost-effective tools that can make parts production a profitable endeavor.
look under metalworking, I have a Midas LTD. It is great as a lathe, but the table size and position limits the milling performance. It is goond for small or medium size parts, but you need risers for the vice if you are going to be milling small things (like painball related).
Email me if you want pics of mine and more details about it.
