    Did anybody see this?

    It made me laugh.
Some guy was trying to sell a minimag barrel and silencer with a starting bid of $345.00 & buy it now of $399.95. Even he knows it does not work as a silencer and is trying to sell it as a rain cover. Now I can see spending some $$$ on a 6-pack or some other useful relic but not this.

I'm not quite sure about this forum's policy on links so you can find this on the most popular auction site, item #: 290196221312

Actually it works very well as a silencer, which is what makes it a federal crime to own one without registering it. Which is also why it is called a "rain cover" and not a silencer.

Feds dont care what you call it. If it reduces the sound even just 1 decible, it is a silencer and you are in deep dodo.

"The seller ended this listing early because the item was lost or broken."

It wasn't lost or broken. He closed the auction because I sent him an article from the ATF about how they classify a paintgun silencer.

Yes, I know that. However that is indeed why people call them rain covers and not silencers.

Depending on the specific model, some worked better than others for sound suppression. One thing I noticed is that the packing materal and most importantly the external porting can make a big difference in how well the silencer worked.

For example the BOA concealer didn't come with enough porting in the outer cover, and drilling a few holes made it a LOT quieter.

I had a PVC silencer back in the day, though not a Taso like this, and it made a BIG difference in sound level. It was unweildy though, which is why I didn't use it much.

The price is obviously crazy, not to mention the cost to register that thing

What about the cosmetic surpressors like LAPCO's. Any restrictions on those? And what if you just happen to put one of those over say a ported barrel? Also is any kind of noise reduction illegal?

If it can silence a paintgun it will probably silence a real gun. The ATF doesn't care how much it silences but if there is any reduction of sound at all it can be considered a silencer.

The one exception the ATF gave is if the silencer is perminantly attatched to the paintgun then it doesn't have to be registered. If you ever remove it you have just "manufactured" a firearm silencer and are a federal criminal (read FELLON).

But it'd be a shame to hack it up now that it's such a collectors' item
