MOTM Open Class

Anyone else notice that 10 out of 12 months on MOTM open class the winner is either electronic or a pneumag ?

What if there were two division of open class, one for mechs an another for electronic and pneumag markers ?

I would hypothesize that this is because the people that are putting money into their mags (lately) are also putting money into pneumatics/electronics.

So, it's not that pneumags/electros always win, it's that all the recent super-custom mags have happened to be either pneumatic or electro.

That being said, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to another category but I don't know how many unique entrants there would be per month.

Give it a chance, worst that will happen is that no one enters that category and it goes away.

I think you need to leave at least one pure Open Class that anyone can compete in. A "pure mech" class still includes pneumags so maybe you can make it a Non-Assist Class ( no electronic or pneumatic assisted parts. ) Since newer RT's and X-Valves can't enter Old Skool, that would give them a class all to themselves. It wouldn't hurt to try it for a month or two.

I say leave it as it is. It is the voting public that makes these choices. Apparently there has not been a mech-mag that people felt cut the mustard.

Why mess with the contest, submit more mechanical mags them, give the people a few other choices.

I was very close to making a 3rd category for august. A retro classic division. For that polished minimag with vert frame, and for the splashed ule mag.

But those entries are rare. Why make a new division for 3 entries? Then next month there is only 1 or 2 entries.

Heck a few months ago it seemed nobody cared much about the 2 divisions we do have.

I personally am happy with the 2 existing divisions.

I agree with leaving it as-is.

My chord-bodied pneumag was defeated by a mech in January (mine came in 2nd place) and there were a few nice E-Mags that month too.

Yes, mechs are a little tougher to gain votes, maybe because there's not too much you can add to them besides a nice body and/or ano. However, I still think that there's plenty of chances for mechs to win if you have something that separates itself from the rest.

afterall, this contest really is based on looks and not necessarily performance.

maybe instead of doin 3 categories, maybe do special months more often where certain mags compete with their own in each class. I think there were months where it was tactical mags n somethin else.

So maybe one month will be pneu mags n pump mags, and so on

to be fair if we start being picky then we could add:

- Anno category
- Creativity category: building a pneumag, EP mag, devilmag or egomag requires some skills. It s not done in 5mn. Xmag and emags are nice but they come ready to shoot.

Too often in my opinion you have a "normal" marker with a crazy anno. Not that I dont like it but what did the owner really do? The anno shop should get the prize
