    Gettysburg Style

So I'm sitting here at work doing anything but work and i got to thinking.(as smoke starts pouring out my ears) I've seen and heard about the civil war style of play. You have the line battles were you load one ball at a time and shoot. This would be an incredible test of accuracy and speed not to mention insane for standing toe to toe. Then i was think about a civil war era rifle that was introduced that was a breach loaded rifle. So then i was thinking that a powerfeed mag body and cut off the power feed and you have your opening for breech loading a paintball. Then you can rig a little spring loaded door to cover the opening and just pull it back to load. Then obviously you could make a stock to make it more rifle like if you want realism or whatever.

Dont ask me why I was thinking about this...I guess it all came from watching kids shooting each other taking turns and firing one shot at a time. Figured if anyone liked this type of thing. I know i would try it. I know Im crazy

Heck if Rap4.com can sell a m14 style rifle made with an automag why not a breechloader.
    Any comments?

    That'd be interesting.

I think the rifle you are referring to is a Springfield "Trap-Door" rifle such as was used at Custer's last stand.

It had a M-1 garand style hatch that slid to allow the loading of the projectile and charge.

Can't say that I ever played "Civil War" but I've always been meaning to try it.

Having a breech loaded paintball would defeat the purpose of that style of play imo.
they choose to load the ball throught the muzzle because it's impractical and puts everyone on the same lvl.
Of course I bet some people choose to use shorter barrels to make loading a bit quicker.

But with loading paintballs throught muzzle you'd have to have something to push them all the way to the bolt...higher chance of breaking fragile paint before you get it all the way in. I figured with a breach loaded rifle would be quicker and yet still keep you at the same level as the next guy...there wouldnt be a power feed or vert feed to just hold a hand full of paint and drop and shoot...there would just be the opening and a spring loaded "trap door" so to speak and would be closed when firing. You'd have to open the breech...drop a round in...door would shut...aim...fire...and repeat. Then figuring the old bodies are twist lock barrels you'd be dropping the paint directly into the barrel. Everyone doing this would keep you on the same level...granted everyone thats playing would have to have one of these "breech loading" rifles. But if someone were to be playing in an honest manner and grabbing and loading one ball at a time it would work against other guys with different markers and you'd still be on the same level. But the key is to have everyone doing it the same way.

Certainly the most common way to play this is to have people dropping single balls through the feedneck. However, having played muzzle-loading games, I can tell you all that it's an absolute blast. Haven't done it in quite a while, but it's still the most fun (and the most laughing) I've experienced playing yet.

I used to do Civil War Re enacting and a few of us played paintball as well with one of the officers owning a paintball field. One summer we decided to see what it would be like. We got two groups, one for union and one for confed, using pumps and loading one ball at a time, we had a small battle using Hardee's tactics. It was actually quite interesting and a lot of fun. Volley fire can be very devastating (at least from 50 feet). The only drawback was that we were using older red oil based paint which stained almost permanently our clothing (civil war uniforms).

I've played that way a few times actually. Do it at the local field where we go out and mix it up with walk ons and such at the end of the day after they have gotten used to being shot. We go from full play to hopper only play to one at a time play. Most of the time we fudge it or at least I do as I load the feed tube... it's not that anyone else can't. BUT the hopper and elbow is removed for sure. So we just pop 1 or 2 into the feed tube and go.

It is quite fun and I do recommend trying it out sometime. I'll have to say that avid pump players are already pretty well skilled in this mode though, so beware!

The take we do on it is this.

Start back to back, and everyone takes 10 good long steps away, turns and lines up. Each team takes a shot in turn, and then take one step back towards the other.
It is certainly hard not to flinch.

We've done one similar, but def not Gettystyle. The markers a placed on the ground in a 2 rows next to each other. Each side (Usually only 5 or so people each) turns with guns behind them and takes 5 or 10 paces away. The rule is whenever the ref blows the whistle the second time it's game on OR if someone starts shooting it's game on. So you get a "GO" whistle and turn and run to your gun, grab it and turn around and run away from the other side and get behind cover. Or you just grab yours and shoot the other team in the back as they are running away.

                  But it's pretty entertaining.
