Hydro rule - 2" tanks

I was under the impression that tanks under 2" diameter were not subject to hydro testing.

There has been some discussion that they are in a for sale thread (not a complaint, my thread and I surely do not want to sell anything or tell anyone something not accurate). It doesn't effect the sale at all as its already sold.

So, I figured I would put the discussion here and see what kind of input we got.

Any tank under 2 inches in diameter and under 2 feet long is exempt from hydro testing. Mind you, the tank has to fit BOTH of these rules. I know this from first hand experience, as I have several 9 oz co2 tanks that don't evan have born on dates ( they are at least 25 years old) that started lengthy discussions, and a web search to astm standards page, when I tried to get them filled.

In Canada, same thing. 2" and under do not need to be tested. They still need to pass a general visual inspection prior to filling. If the tanks have any noticeable deformities that could make them subject to failure, then they can be refused.

Now from my understanding after reading all that if your 13 or 22 CI tank has a certain born on date that it falls into the must be re-hydro tested every 5 years...

Doesn't the special permit or exemption still need to be current? Not that any filler would ever check...

Requalification (HYDROTESTING) not required per the note under table 1 in 49CFR part 180.205. The note reads, "Any cylinder not exceeding two (2) inches in outside diameter and less than two (2) feet in length is exempt from volumetric expansion testing."
