It seems to me like it would be much easier to build an a mag that uses an electric solenoid (E-mag style) instead a pneumatic solenoid, but since every other marker seems to use pneumatics I must be wrong. Aside from the battery weight, are there disadvantages to using electric solenoids that I am unaware of?

I did see a short post with a video on another site; a smaller noid was used, maybe it was you.Originally posted by kcombs9well the E mag noid is HUGH.
I did experiment with a smaller noid that could run off a 9v and a ult on/off...
but it didn't work out too well, I still have some of the parts.
so just size and weight IMO
What kind of problems did you run into?

the 9v didn't last long and the sear is so heavy for that to try and pull, mounting the noid was an issue and getting it hooked to the sear was not the best, its a smaller plunger then the standard.Originally posted by emcl29I did see a short post with a video on another site; a smaller noid was used, maybe it was you.

here's my test fire video

I had a M90 coming so I kinda scraped that and worked on other projects, but maybe a lithium battery with more amp hours might work (small RC car battery rather then 9v)

I was thinking that given the current state of electronics, it would by feasible to take a stock frame/rail and mod them so that they would accept some combination of battery and electric noid. Essentially building a EP mag w/o the LPR, ram, etc. Looks like you started with an Emag frame which makes sense.

Kcombs, how many cycles could you get out of a 9V using the smaller noid that you had on your Emag in the video?

Coincidence, since I was looking at this very same thing last week. At $17 to $36 for a pull type solenoid that run on 9v to 12v. I also know that there are many boards that are designed for this type of solenoid. I'm building an Emag from scratch and the amount of individual parts are staggering.
What is the thread size into the solenoid mount? What board did you use?

Slick, does it run off the 9v only? If so, how many shots per battery?Originally posted by mpsdThis is not an e-pneu-mag, but purelly electronic:

It does. Thousands.
You should also look to VER frames. Same board and noid as that one but mounted onto a frame made for it from scratch.

I had seen VER frames before but had no idea what they were, I assumed they were PE frames and not E frames, guess they render this thread pointless.

The reason you can use the smaller solenoids on electronic-only frames is because the sear assembly is smaller and has less mass. The less mass allows the use of a ULT which also requires less force to pull it in. As soon as you go to a larger sear that needs the mechanical trigger part, then the sear gets bigger and heavier and you need the larger diameter RT on-off which requires more force to pull it in. Its a catch 22 situation. The larger solenoid for the emag is a product of its own function.Except for the Automag in front, its usually the man behind the equipment that counts.
