I have always had people assume that the gun is automatic based upon the name. Now, I just say it is a "mag" and leave it at that.
I must say, though, that the comment about the compressed air question was rather entertaining.
One of my favorite things to do when asked really odd questions (although I usually don't do it to first-timers, as I don't want to spoil the experience) is to make up extraordinary fabrications. I will let the people stare in awe and/or confusion for a while. After an appropriate time has elapsed, I tell them it was all a lie. It is usually good for a few laughs.

      Yeah I do that sometimes.

      "how fast does it shoot?"

      "30bps. no chopping."

"man I gotta get wonna those."

      "Where did you get it?"

"I had it custom made by Bob Long"

      "Wow!"

Of course in the end I tell them I was just kidding.

That must be nice. Where I live there are alot of kids toting cockers and stuff. In order to get the wild looks and freaky questions I have to bring out the VM-68 with the dual CO2 tank setup. Start swinging that M-60 sized piece of hardware around and everybody wants to take a look. The best though is when they hold it, it must weigh 15 lbs loaded with CO2 and balls. They nearly fall over.

Some people probably haven't seen the pictures of it, but if you really want to scare the newbies, how about the dual-warp-fed-Nasty-Typhoon?
I'm usually happy just walking on to the woods games with my jersey and flashy gun and letting them THINK I'm better than I am. I also have fun by dumping a lot of paint in a short time on the target range while they're sitting through orientation. Gives them something to worry about.

Conversation I had in a store the other day:

              "Hey, what is that?"

              "A Minimag."

              "Oh."

              "Isn't that a semi-automatic?"

              "Yup, it is."

"Oh. I don't shoot those 'cause they don't have auto-triggers. My SL-68 does. Does Minimag make a gun with an auto-trigger?"

heh, I get stuff like that all the time. The most interesting has been while I was carrying an old P-68 around, people were going WTF, especially after I put my PMI 48/3K on the back bottle adaptor and a 12V revvy on it. I was getting 'Is That a Stroker?' and 'What the h*ll is that?' all the time. I get it for my Mag and my Defiant.

The best thing is explaining to a Defiant owner who has been lording it over a Bushy owner the exact differences between the two (Gripframe & Barrel Threads, the Bushy Grip is better too, as it takes stickies).

My personal favorites concerned my Phantom VSC...

                  "Is that a scope?"
                  "Do you look through there?"

                  "Where is your tank?"
                  "Where does your paint go?"

Why do I shoot a pump?

                  A. It's more fun to use on the field.
                  B. It scares the crap out of the kiddies who think I'm a Sniper until I rush them and force surrenders...

Sometimes feelinf like a God is fun

One of the last times I played I was the only guy there NOT using a Tippmann. Some of the older rec guys just didn't care but the kids that were there were like WOW that's shiny and asking the usuall stupid questions. Later in the day I did take out my Tippmann(for reminecing purposes) and I have had that up to 10bps over the chrono before with double trigger and ended up scareing the hell out of em

I never seemed to be a newbie of that calibur... I started out with just bits and pieces of knowledge of every gun. I knew there were angel, talons, automag, autocockers, spyders, piranhas, pumps, and shockers to start out with. Then my knowledge just grew. I never had any experience with any dumb newbies because I'm still pretty much a newbie... lol... The biggest AO postwhore and I'm still a newbie...

                        Gotta tell one

                        OK,

I used to have a BBT Typhoon. This was a nickle plated Typhoon built by AO member Paladin but with a removable Smart Parts barrel (almost every other Typhoon has a fixed barrel). I had a female Stablizer on it with a gas-though fore grip and CO2.

If you've never seen a Typhoon in person they are really quite impressive looking. They operate like a Cocker, with the ram moving the bolt back and forth and all - but they look like a bunch of shiney tubes soldered together (which is exactly what they are).

Anyway, the one that REALLY got me was the kid who asked me if it was an AUTOMAG!!!

Older guys asked if it was a Sheridan (not too big a stretch) and it was mistaken for a Sovreign (which I admit it has a very small resemblance to).

One kid asked if it was a tricked Spyder and I told him "yeah - I had to put about a grand into it to get it to shoot like this" and another kid just stared at it and asked me if I was a "Pro"!

Pretty much wherever I went people did double takes on it - even the fairly experienced players because it not only was unusual, but rather cool looking being all nickle and tuby and stuff.

But an Automag? That one really stumped me!

                        Anyway, great thread!

Yeah that bugs me. Usually what happens, is they will say, "what kind of gun do you have?" I will say, "Automag." And they mistake that for automatic, and its not like the people I know would know what an automag was...they don't play paintball or did for 6 months and own Tippmann 98's. hahaha.

I still find it strange that a lot of people don't look into paintball more... They just buy a gun like a spyder or a tippmann and they turn that into their world. They don't ever learn about other guns, they consider their guns the best, etc... I don't get those types that do this.
