More times than not, when you have to ask that about a Mag upgrade...the answer is no.

PS - CO2 can enter your gun at higher pressures than an HPA tank, so where is the sense in this "upgrade?"

I almost have to laugh when I see stuff like this listed in PBGear or any other store. I wonder if anyone actually falls for this.

Compressed Air input pressure = 850 psi

Use the same piston for both. Pressure is pressure. Compressed air is just cleaner for the mag because it isn't in liquid form like compressed CO2. I may be wrong, but I believe that the automag AIR regulator is rated at 3000psi. The automag was designed with compressed air in mind right from the start.

Any mag, just take off the CO2 bottle and put on an air bottle (as long as the air input is not a low pressure design). Mags should have at least 250psi over their rated operating pressure of ~400psi.

Away you go.

While I agree with you as far as the value (or lack thereof) of this upgrade, your argument was incorrect. CO2 does not stay at a constant pressure as HPA does. The whole purpose of moving to an HPA system is to have an easily regulated gas that stays at a fairly regular pressure. The pressure of CO2 can spike and fall drastically depending on temperature, making it a less "user-friendly" gas.

Also, the original Automag predated HPA systems and was designed with CO2 in mind.

One minor point but almost in agreement is that CO2 does tend to stay pretty steady pressure above 50 some degree's. It fluctuates a lot more below that and resists a bit vaporizing properly. And if it is very hot it can start getting a bit wacky. But from the range of say 55 to 85 degrees its pretty steady around 850 give or take 25 or so psi. So that is kind of in agreement with both of you in some respects.

When I got my 1st mag about 5 years ago, I called the factory about it. They said it's not necessary with level X (don't remember) markers. But, it must have been useful at some point. It's listed on page 12 of the automag manual in the troubleshooting flowchart.
