    Shatnerball and Walkie Talkies

Those of you fellow AO'ers who are going to shatnerball mentioned that Walkie Talkies would be a good thing to bring. I'm all about goin out and buying one if reasonably priced, but I want to make sure that it's compatable with everyone else's.

That being said, i went to the local Meijer (like a wal-mart) and checked out their selection. One Walkie in particular stood out cause it had a earphone/mic plugin thing, 2 mile range, and said it was compatable with other walkies. 50 bucks. SHould I go ahead and pick this one up?

If ya dont think it'll work with all of yours, let me know which brand(s) to consider.

    Thanks in advance!

Oh, will I be the only AO'er using a 'Cocker?

don't worry many AOers use markers other than a mag. I myself will be using one of two timmies. Fred uses a silly phantom.
Personally I don't have a walkie and don't plan on getting one. Haven't ever used one before. Really only one or two people per squad would need them to keep in contact with the other groups.
You are the Wormtongue of AO.~bofh

            it's all good, i understand..

i was at best buy in W. Dundee last week and the security guys were frisking EMPLOYEES who were going out for a smoke break! even made them lift up their pants to show they had nothing in their socks... talk about unbelievable security!

so yeah in a nutshell i understand why you dont want to take that risk.

how much do those walkies run for retail there?

I would not recommend any walkie that operates on the FRS band (EDIT- actually as i mentioned below, the Motorola radios with the privacy bands would do.). At Great Adventure (Six Flags to you non NJ people) we had some and there wasnt a channel you could go on where there werent 10 people trying to talk at the same time. FRS radios are the most common now as well, so a good number of the 3000 people at shatnerball will probably be using those over any other kinds. I know the motorola radios to have privacy sub frequencies, but they are the more expensive ones. If you wanna go cheap though, CB radios would do the trick. BTW, maybe we should get a few scanners? just a thought

Krazy- LOL! I might be msg'ing you if it turns out that we will be using those kinds of radios..

Kaiser- good input, i wonder what THE MAN (AGD) would like us to do, considering that he's our general and all. A scanner would own, we'd get to listen in on what shatner was up to.

i wonder though if there's a rule against this in scenario play?

It's all good, and for anyone else perusing the post, if you want to get hooked up with a radio cheap, I can get them for you.

FRS will work fine. Each team will likely assign a band to a platoon. If the teams are comprised of a dozen platoons, we will have plenty of FRS channels to work with.

A scanner would be nice...check up on all the communications. Everyone just remember that the other team will have them too. I find too much dependancy on radios hurt sometimes.

Privacy bands on the Motorolas only filter you from hearing other people on the same freq, it doesn't prevent you from being heard by them. Say 4 people are on channel 6, two of those have a privacy code of 42, the others have theirs set to 0.... those with the 42 won't be able to hear the guys chatting at 0, but the guys at 0 will be able to hear the guys at 42.

I use a scanner during scenario games to search for enemy intel, it's amazing what people will say when they think they can't be heard :)

Using game codes like you do in tournies goes far.
