    Age of marshalls

I sit here typing this in a fairly distressed mood, after having just been 'sacked' (fired) from my job as marshall at a rental site in england. I have been marshalling there for the 11 months. I am 16, but look older. I was told the reason for my 'dissmissal' was that the site only wanted to empoly older marshalls (20/30 years old) as they thought it was easier for older marshalls to cope with 'agressive' players. Now, i ask you this. do you think this is unfair? I am a fair marshall, and in 11 months of marshalling paintball i have only had 2 incidents from stupid nit-wits. I loved my job, and as it was cash in hand, i cannot calm unfair dissmissal. They have still offered to let me play paintball at reduced price, paying cost price for paint. I feel really pissed off at the moment.

question: Would you obay a marshalls decision what ever his age, given that he/she had more paintball experiance than you?

    one pissed off ex-marshall,
    Eddie.

Its all in the tone of your voice. I'd listen to a 2 year old ref if they sound confident about their call and it seemed intelligent to me, even if they've never played a day of paintball in their life. It make's me feel like you know what your talking about and I'll respect your decision.

A lot of problems come from refs that arent sure if they've made the right decision and let that leak out through their voice. Player's are going to pick up on that right away and take advantage of it.

If you make a decision, even if you realize later that its a bad one, you have to take control of the situation and enforce it.

Sorry to hear about you getting sacked. Reffing's fun but at least you still get to keep the perks. Maybe another field near you is looking to hire? Just a thought.

      Keep your head high!

fisrt of all every ref (marshal) should be 'listened to' once your a player on the field. if a player dosnt think that the ref knows what he is talking about then he bring it up with the field operator. so go ask your field operator if anyone has ever brought up any questions about your skill as a ref, if not then ask if he would consider letting you continue a an 'associate' ref or junior ref. i know you may think of that title as a demotion but consider this, some of the adults you will be reffing have been playin since you where in diapers. ihave been playin since you where 2. i dont meen that as an insult but 11 months inst very long. tell him that being an associate or junior ref will let you keep reffing and learnig from older more experienced ref. then if he says that he have to let other younger players ref if he lets you ref, then you tell him that since you were reffing before the decision was made then it shouldnt affect you!

yeah, i know my paintball experiance is by no means the biggest, but EVERONE has to of started somewhere! there are other ways this could of been delt with, but i doubt that i'm getting the full story. there must be other factors behind the decision. it was a fun time, and now i can PLAY paintball even more! i'll find the full story soon, and let you guys onto the real reason!!!!

thanks for everything, its good to hear what people think! keep it coming!

What are England's laws regarding termination due to age? I Dont think they could have done that here in the states.

yeah, normaly i'd be able to sue for unfair dissmissal, but it was cash in hand, and not a 'proper' job. thats the bummer of it all! nice idea anyway............

I agree with Shartley, You're only 16, don't let this make you all bent out of shape. It may be the first time you've been fired.. but I can assure you it probably won't be the last time. I understand your frustrations about losing such an easy and fun job, but now you have that experience under your belt. Maybe there is another field somewhere that needs part-time help. Who knows.. he may have just let you go temporarily. Maybe moneys tight at the shop, you're still gettin sick discounts, BE HAPPY!! And porobably are waived from paying a field fee. I wish I had some fields like that around here! I'd go ref on my days off that I didn't want to play just so I could get those discounts! WOOooOOT!
