    It takes more work

    start with 220 grit paper and don't move up (to a higher grit) until you have removed ALL of the surface features you want removed. There should be nothing on the surface except the scratches from the 220 grit paper.

    Then move up. You should get more grits - 220 - 400 - 800 - 1000 - 1500 - 2000 is a good sequence. You don't have to spend as much time with the higher grits as you do with the 220. When you have done all you think you need with the 220 you are may be 1/2 way done.

    You CAN get a very nice finish that way, but it will never be chrome.

          Ive done it before... it can be chrome... can you say about a week and a half with extra fine steel wool...
