its a test to determine the safety of nitrogen tanks, and other air tanks, and such, what they do is take the reg off the tank and fill the tank with water, the water pressure builds and if the tank swells then it passes and if it doesn't then it does not pass, I am pretty sure about that but if I have it switched around some one please tell me, hydrotest is just testing a tanks safety by using a water test

HPA tanks expand when you fill them. Over time, they expand and then dont contract back to an acceptable level, which means the tank is showing stress and is no longer safe. When they hydro test they fill it with water and measure how much the tank holds over what it held when it was first made. If it holds more then it should, it gets a nice hole drilled in it. There are also other things they do during a hydrotest most times, like check the bottle threading for wear, scratches etc. but thats the basic idea.

All tanks have a date stamped on them. Steel/Aluminum Tanks must be Hydro'd every 5 years except certain narrow steel tanks. Fibre-wrapped tanks are 3 years, except for certain new tanks which are 5 years. This applies to CO2 tanks as well as HPA tanks.

The date stamped on them is the month/year it was last hydro's, it must be hydro'd within 3/5 years(depending on tank type) of that date to be filled.

When a tank is hydro'd a new sticker is placed over the hydro date, with the new date.

Yes. All tanks (except for really small co2 tanks) have to be hydrotested at regular intervals (either 3 or 5 years) for you to use them. A field or store will usually tell you when you need to get it done.

some fire departments and most scuba diving shops can either do it in house, or have it sent out. it will usually run you $15-30 to have it done.
