    Micromag body

Question: Is the black exterior of the body on the Micromag (it's a couple years old, the standard matte finish) a powder coat or is it anodized? The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to anodize it red @ home but if it's already been anodized I'm out of luck. Since the body is made of aluminum I'm guessing that the black coat is from anodization, but if anybody knows for sure I'd appreciate an answer. Thanks.

It's Anno. You would need to strip it, then re-anno.

A Wire wheel, mounted on a dremel or bench grinder. Use it to scrub off the Anno'd layer of aluminum.

Mine does too. I don't think it'll matter that much though, after looking at a few sites I found the best way to de-anodize an anodized part is to mix lye w/ water and submurge the part for 20 minutes or so. That should be enough to take pretty much anything off the aluminum. Correct me if I'm wrong here, I could always sand it but w/ the milling on my micromag body it would be quite a pain in the ***.

lye will strip anno off but beware there is a steel insert pressed into the micro body that will have to be machined out before you can have it re annodized and then you will have to have another insert made and pressed back in afterwords or the anno bath will destroy the body
the acid does not like steel and will eat it away and take with it most of the metal around it

Thanks for the info magmonkey. I didn't know that there were steel parts in the body. I'm probably not going to mess with it now, as I don't have the equipment to machine the steel piece out. What would you need, if I were to try it?

You could have it powder coated.

There is a powder coat that I have (red, grape, and gold) that is translucent wich with a polished to very shiny base will produce a very high quality anodize finish, yes it is very shiny.
here is a pic you can see the translucent better in person than on film
