happened to my friend when he was doing a 5 mile run while i was biking with him. he forgot to stretch and his calfs just cramped up about 2 miles into the run. Then he stretched and and drank some more water and went on. That seemed to do the trick so I suggest water and stretching.

Caffein is a diuretic, and a I believe it is also a vasoconstrictor. As such, it can deplete levels of water, and also will limit the amount of oxygen-rich blood that can reach you cells. This results in a swich from aerobic respiration to anaerobic, during which lactic acid is a byproduct. This alters conformation of proteins such as actin and myosin.
Some soft-drinks also contain ubelievably high levels of solutes, which can sap water from cells.

Lack of proper electrolytic balances in the muscle can cause cramping, decrease calcium levels, and lead to an inability of the cells to cease cross-bridging of fibers (lack of oxygen and reactive constituents will also limit the rate at which cross-bridging can be ceased).

As mentioned, maintain a good electrolytic balance with diet and fluid intake. Make sure to slowly increase your heart rate with warming up, so that blood is flowing quickly enough to supply your muscles with enough oxygen. Also, stretch your muscles (but not befor warming up).
Finally, increase vascularity and oxygen efficiency with exercise.
