    Is this a good buy?

Totally clueless newbie. Actually, son wants to be a newbie and I am even more clueless.
He has been offered a 68 Automag Classis w/ an A.N.X. valve and guage system, custom barrell that I can't identify, 20oz CO2 tank, mask, and basic hopper. Looks like all in good shape. Not new but clean and not dented nor scratched up. Neat Multicolored swirled wooden grips (I think wooden)

    $250.00

Guy says he's got about $1000.00 invested

ok first off to let you know anything that is not made by agd that is put into an automag will definately hinder the markers performance. in your case its this i believe you meant to say ans valve. if he can give you the stock parts then it really isnt that bad a deal. custom barrel i really dont think can be that good but you never know until told what kind of barrel it is. the co2 tank has to be anti siphoned for you to have it work alright. just make a note that all automags work ok on co2 and work incredible on compressed air. all in all if he can give you the stock parts then yeah its a really good deal. but if he cant then in my opinion you might be better off getting something else brand new.

another thing is that the automag has such little kick that the standard hopper will not feed paint properly. you need to get an agitated hopper.

and he has 1000 invested in it is b.s. because i have invested 800 and have much better things on mine such as better barrels( smarts parts all american, lapco bigshot, taso eliminator, and jj ceramic) a nice nitro tank and a blue viewloader revolution to boot.

i paid 300 for my mag brand new and i got the mag barrel fittings asa and gas thru grip.

      Welcome kltuck!

Well it may not be too bad. I would be leary of that ANS stuff. And depending on how the CO2 is set up that could be a problem. You do not mention any Expansion Chamber or stabilizer. It may have one of those and needs one but you may not be savy enough yet to recognize one. Can you get us a picture and post it here so we can see what else it may have? We can help you a little more if you can.

Another option to explore is using one of our more trusted members here to put together a working used Mag for you. Then we can be sure you are getting what you need.

AGD, where we are so good we can do it with only ONE tube!

When i was a kid (14 or so) i used a minimag with co2 on a remote line. I never had problems with freezeing up as long as it was over about 80 outside and i shot less than 300 rounds a game. It was an excelent system because i wasnt really strong enough to play all day while carrying a 20oz.

              Kltuck,

Welcome to AO. I'll offer you a couple of suggestions. As has been suggested it is best to stick with stock Mag markers that have not been modified with aftermarket parts. This will make your warranty good with AGD and that may save you considerable frustration later on. You mentioned the mag you are looking at is a Classic? There are several body styles produced for mags. One body style has a feed tube that extends straight out from the body and is referred to as the standard feed body, another common body style has a tube of the same rough dimensions that lays sideways across the rest of the marker's body and is referred to as a power feed.

For most right handed folks the body style of choice is going to be a power feed/hopper left body. The power feed body will feed the paintballs from the hopper into the marker smoother than the standard feed body. This does not make the standard feed body bad but the power feed is generally considered a very worthwhile enhancement. If you examine a number of posts here or go to www.airgun.com and look at their product pages you will be able to see the different body styles.

With goggles, most are fairly good provided you get what is called a thermal lens on it. This is simply a double pane lens that helps prevent the humidity you give off while playing from fogging your mask. A good Mask model that should serve you well would be the JT Spectra. The mask fits most folks well, provides good protection and replacement lenses are readily available at most paintball stores or online shops. You can get a JT Spectra new online pretty cheap at places like paintballgear.com so if it does not come with the marker you buy, just pick one up online.

When you watch your son's friends having to sit on the sidelines because their marker isn't working properly, you will be glad you got your son a mag.
A good friend is one that will come and bail you out of jail.
A great friend is one that is sitting next to you in jail saying "Man that was F#%*ing Awesome"!
